Maybury Upbeat After Bayern Draw

Fri 15 Feb, 08:09 AM

Aberdeen defender Alan Maybury remained philosophical over the penalty decision that denied the Dons a famous victory over Bayern Munich - as he has spent most of the season playing in front of "one man and his dog".

The Irishman signed on loan from Leicester last month after being restricted to three first-team matches this season and he was determined to savour the memorable UEFA Cup clash.

Maybury was penalised by Spanish ref Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez after Ze Roberto's cross hit his arm but the Dons were denied a stronger claim in the first minute when Andreas Ottl handled as he made a mess of a header.

Hamit Altintop converted at the second attempt to earn Bayern a 2-2 draw.

Maybury said: "I got my leg out to make myself as big as possible to block the cross.

"It missed my leg and must have just missed my body and it hit me on about the elbow.

"I think they were appealing for a corner, no-one other than the ref thought it was a penalty.

"There was a similar one in the first half which we didn't get. It's one of those things, there is not a lot you can do about it.

"There was a time I would probably argue and get myself in trouble but there's no point. Sometimes they go for you and sometimes they don't.

"I could be playing reserve-team football that means absolutely nothing, at some non-league ground in front of one man and his dog.

"We had a semi-final last week then the Celtic game, and now a great night in front of a full stadium. This is exactly the reason I came here."

The Dons conceded nine goals in that CIS Cup defeat by Dundee United and the loss to Celtic so Maybury was delighted they kept themselves in the tie for next week's trip to Germany.

"People had written us off before the game and over the piece it was probably a fair result," the 29-year-old said.

"I am a little bit aggrieved at the penalty, but they pobably the had better of things in the second half. We had the better of the first half so it was a fair result.

"With the stature of a team like Bayern Munich you just want to keep yourselves in the tie.

"We have half a chance when we go over there, we will just try to keep ourselves in the game as long as we can."

Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld twice saw his team fall behind to goals from England Under-19 team-mates Josh Walker and Sone Aluko before Miroslav Klose and then Altintop equalised.

But he had not been surprised by the quality of the Dons.

"I saw some good signs when they played against Celtic," he said. "They also played really well against Copenhagen. When they are on fire they can really play so I wasn't surprised."

But he added: "We are now in a good position. We have an advantage taking two goals home and we will be playing in front of our own fans. I would say we are now the favourites."
