Premier League - Portsmouth hand Hart debut win

Eurosport - Sun, 15 Feb 10:24:00 2009

Portsmouth began life after Tony Adams with a 2-0 home victory over a poor Manchester City side at Fratton Park.

FOOTBALL Portsmouth score against Manchester City Premier League 2008/2009 - 0

David Nugent missed a hat-trick of fine chances before Glen Johnson opened the scoring in the 70th minute, with Hermann Hreidarsson thumping a fine header past Shay Given two minutes later to seal the win.

City looked completely out of sorts, as they have done on the road for much of the season, and only brought a serious save out of David James in the final ten minutes.

Mark Hughes's men have now gone 10 away games without a win and missed the chance to move into seventh; Portsmouth climb above Tottenham into 15th spot.

City started very slowly and after eight minutes Portsmouth nearly drew first blood. On-loan winger Jermaine Pennant cut in at pace from the right, leaving Wayne Bridge in his wake, before a ricochet found its way to Peter Crouch eight yards out. The England forward made firm contact with his snap-volley but Given did not have to move to take the shot.

Two minutes later there was another scare for a nervous-looking City defence that seemed to be missing Richard Dunne's leadership. Nugent breached the offside trap but ran the ball too far as Given left his line to close down the angle.

The visitors were struggling for a foothold in the game but survived again when Niko Kranjcar waited a fraction too long for the ball to drop and blazed over on the turn after 16 minutes.

City were restricted to efforts from distance, and Elano should have done better with his 20-yard shot after being picked out in plenty of space on the edge of the box only to blaze a few yards over the crossbar.

Given had already saved a low Johnson effort seven minutes into the second half before Nugent fluffed another fine chance wide of the far post when he had been set loose by Kranjcar's exquisite pass.

Then, with 20 minutes to play, Johnson finally broke the deadlock. The England full-back, watched from the stands by Fabio Capello's right-hand man, Stuart Pearce, scrapped his way down the right wing before cutting inside and drilling the ball towards Given's near post.

The brilliant Ireland keeper got down well to beat the shot away but it was Johnson, following up his initial effort, who collected the rebound and despatched it coolly into the top corner.

And five minutes later Pompey were two up. Pennant won and took a corner on the right, with Premier League debutant Shaleum Logan failing to challenge the leaping Hreidarsson, who powered his header into the top corner.

James, who broke Gary Speed's Premier League record with his 536th top-flight appearance, ensured he would mark his day with a clean sheet, superbly saving at full stretch from Ched Evans' late header.
