McCormack strike sinks Terriers

Sat 15 Mar, 08:30 PM

Alan McCormack struck a last-gasp winner to extend Southend's unbeaten run to six league matches with a 2-1 win at Huddersfield.McCormack, who scored twice against Huddersfield in December in their 4-1 win, hit a right-foot shot that crept out of Matt Glennon's reach to break Huddersfield's hearts.

Town thought they had grabbed a draw when Andy Booth headed home his seventh goal of the season with 17 minutes to go as the veteran striker rose prodigiously to nod home Robbie Williams' corner.

Southend shaded a woeful first half with winger Tommy Black proving too hot to handle for the hosts' defence. Black set up Hal Robson-Kanu for the opening goal five minutes before the interval, with the on-loan Reading winger curling a left-foot shot past the despairing dive of Glennon.

Southend should have scored earlier through James Walker after a lovely ball from Black had carved open the Huddersfield back four, but the striker thumped his drive into the sidenetting.

But Town rallied after the break and Booth nearly equalised from a Williams free-kick, but his downward header went straight into the arms of Darryl Flahavan.
