Rotherham United reignited their play-off hopes with a deserved 2-1 victory over neighbours Chesterfield at Millmoor on Saturday.The Millers enjoyed the luxury of a two-goal advantage at the break - but it could easily have been different had Jack Lester not wasted a great chance after only five minutes when with only the keeper to beat he fired over the bar.
Peter Holmes gave Rotherham the lead after 29 minutes with a brilliant free-kick after Peter Hartley was booked for a foul on the edge of the area. Holmes lifted a right-foot effort up and over the wall and into the top corner.
Chris O'Grady almost grabbed a second for Rotherham with a delicate glancing header before Marc Joseph made it two in the 44th minute when Peter Holmes' free kick was headed out only as far as Joseph who hit a delicate volley from the edge of the area straight into the top corner.
Rotherham could have increased their lead just after the break but Jamie Yates and Derek Holmes both went close and it was Chesterfield who set up an exciting finish when they pulled one back with 15 minutes remaining.
Jamie Ward reacted the quickest to a ball into the Rotherham penalty area and fired home but Rotherham held out for a deserved victory.
