Goals from Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan and Antonio Lopez helped seal a remarkable 3-2 comeback win for Atletico Madrid at home to Villarreal.
Matias Fernandez and Cani put the visitors two goals up against the run of play, with goalkeeper Diego Lopez making a string of excellent saves to frustrate Atletico.
Fernandez's opener came after 18 minutes, when Javi Venta chased down a long ball and cut it back to the Chilean forward after a spell of heavy pressure by the hosts.
Diego Lopez made half a dozen top saves to deny Atletico and his heroics seemed to have paid off when, on 52 minutes, Cani played a great one-two with Giuseppe Rossi on the edge of the Rojiblancos' box before clipping a sweet finish over Leo Franco.
The hosts hit back immediately when Forlan smashed a curling shot against the post and Aguero followed up to slide the ball into the empty net.
Things fell apart for El Submarino Amarillo just after the hour mark when Javi Venta was sent off for a second yellow card.
Forlan equalised with a rising drive after heavy pressure from Atletico and diminutive full-back Antonio Lopez won the game with a towering header from a Simao corner that belied his stature at 5'8".
There was still time for Diego Lopez to deny Forlan with a ninth reflex save of the match, while the Uruguayan former Manchester United striker missed a sitter late on when put clean through by substitute Mario.
Villarreal stay fourth, two points ahead of Atletico.
