Joe Royle has been appointed manager of Oldham Athletic following the departure of John Sheridan.

The Latics parted company with Sheridan following a crushing 6-2 defeat to MK Dons on Saturday but the club have moved swiftly to name club legend Royle as his replacement.

The 59-year-old, arguably the most successful manager in Oldham's history, will take over with immediate effect and will be officially unveiled at a news conference on Sunday.

Royle had previously been at the club during the late eighties and early nineties, guiding them to a league cup final in 1990 and two FA Cup semi-finals against Manchester United.

The former Everton and Manchester City boss also took Oldham to the second division title in 1990 before keeping the club in the top flight for three seasons.

The club's official website confirmed: "(Royle) will take charge of his first Latics game since 1994 this Saturday when Tranmere Rovers visit Boundary Park."

The play-off chasing Latics are only one point outside the top six but have failed to win in three matches amidst controversy regarding discipline at the club.

An unnamed player was fined two weeks pay for an incident during a team night out at Belle Vue dog track last week while it was alleged that other members of the playing and coaching staff behaved inappropriately.

Oldham led twice against MK Dons on Saturday but were over-run in the second half, when they conceded four without reply.
