Six Nations - Wales keep title hopes alive

Eurosport - Sun, 15 Mar 17:48:00 2009

Defending champions Wales came from behind to keep their Six Nations title hopes alive with an unconvincing 20-15 win over Italy in Rome on Saturday.

Shane Williams - Wales - 0

The visitors struggled for rhythm throughout and crept home thanks to a try by replacement centre Tom Shanklin eight minutes from time.

Wing Shane Williams also touched down and fly-half James Hook kicked the rest for a third win from four for the Welsh, whose failure to pile up the points could leave them chasing a huge target in next week's final match at home to leaders Ireland.

Full-back Andrea Marcato had given Italy hope of springing a massive upset a minute before Shanklin's try, by putting them two points ahead with his fifth successful penalty.

Nick Mallett's side face another wooden spoon but should be encouraged by a spirited performances after losing heavily to England, Ireland and Scotland.

Wales coach Warren Gatland gave many of his second-stringers the chance to impress, with only six of the players who started last month's 21-16 defeat by France taking the field but the home side made the early running.

They took the lead in the sixth minute with Marcato's first and created problems with some good scavenging and clever grubber kicks and chips.

They were unable to turn good field positions into points and Wales punished them in the 27th minute when Williams scored his 17th try in 17 games after nice work from captain Alun-Wyn Jones and the returning Gavin Henson.

Hook, who had missed an easy place-kick, slotted the conversion.

The home team kept plugging away and Marcato added two more penalties for a 9-7 lead.

Italy fly-half Luke McLean then sparked panic with a lob to the corner shortly before the break but wing Mark Jones just managed to get a hand on the ball and save a try.

The Azzurri tried to barge their way over after the ensuing scrum but the Welsh defence was resolute and they settled for a drop goal attempt, which Marcato missed.

The hosts kept up the pressure at the start of the second half, dominating up front and producing some flashes of fluid rugby but they let the Welsh off the hook with mistakes at key moments.

Marcato extended the lead before Hook edged the Welsh ahead with two penalties.

The Italian full-back was on target again with his boot in the 71st, but the home crowd's hopes of victory did not last, as Shanklin sold a dummy and went over after Wales had recaptured possession from the re-start.

  1. If Ireland beat Wales and England beat Scotland. Rubbish England could finish 2nd in the Championship above the magnificent Welsh.

  4. The problem for Wales and as a Welshman is that the so called strength in depth is a figment of imagination and that is really disappointing. I am glad that due to commitments I did not get to see the game and the highlights did not encourage. This then goes back to the developmental problem and the Under 20 Championship should serve as a warning although it did look a good win against Italy this weekend. Rugby is a sport with the ball played in hand. Our kicking game is getting worse as well and when we do keep ball in hand the ball carrier gets isolated too many times, too many turnovers. Anyway we have to up our game for next week otherwise it is going to be a painful experience esp against the Irish who play an unclean sort of game anyway.

    What was that?

I think you will find that England have improved with every match of the this 6N, while Wales have got worse.

  6. I am Welsh but have to agree that wales were poor yesterday and largely that was down to the team selection, far to many changes especialy in the front five where Italy are always very strong. I think the best front five should have played, no reason not to rest martin wiliiams and ryan jones as the back row are all good players. Stephen Jones needed to play to keep Italy in their own half, Henson needed to play shanklin should have been along side him, Mark Jones had his chance when Shane was in jured and did not take it so halfpenny should have played and Byrne could have been rested and Roberts could have played full back as they will definantly need Byrne against ireland. Wales needed a good win against Italy not a cricket score but enough so that a 5 or 6 point win against Ireland would have taken the title i think they have left them selves to much to do Ireland grand slam ????? Depends how much Wales chase the big win We should settle for the triple crown!!!

  9. Did anyone notice that Hook never passed the ball to Henson at all. The first time that he passed to the inside centre was when Shankland came on and the lack of tries by Wales was down to a dreadful tactical game by Hook who kicked all of Wales possession and did it badly, a major problem as Italy had the better forward control anyway. This side was not as some say Wales B but A minus a few key players. Italy played to their strengths and scared Wales. What scares me is the inability of Gatland to see that Hook is a problem.

  11. Well done Italy . Not enough credit given to your efforts . Overall a poor game , i blame the ELV's .
d a atkinson they don't call us South Wales as we are a united nation . Hope that gives you some insight .

  12. It was a poor game due to Wales's 10 changes. You are not going to get cohesion when you make so many changes. There is no time to experiment during the six nations, and this game will ultimately cost them the championship.

Basically Italy are a poor side, and would of not scored a try even if they were still playing today. I am not convinced the ref had his best game ever, some of the decisions were just incorrect, and it just kept Italy in the game.

There were no winners of this match, it did Wales no favours whatsoever, I hope Gatland will learn from his very expensive mistake.

    From stephen.jefferies, on Sun 15 Mar 10:28AM
  13. Its beyond me why they keep calling the team Wales. It should be south wales as no one from the middle or north of wales ever plays. Soccer goggs.

  15. lets hope its a better match next week, Ireland & Wales are better than they both played today, it is normal when a bad team plays a good team they bring the good team down to their level both Scotland and Italy done this today. So Celtic pride next week and show the rest of them what we are capable off good rugby with loads of points and skill, Ireland grand slam is on.
