Campbell targets United first team

Tue 15 Apr, 10:00 AM

Manchester United hitman Fraizer Campbell, currently on loan at Hull, is determined to force his way into Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team plans.Ferguson allowed Campbell to join Hull on loan in October 2007 and the 20-year-old has since proved a big hit at the KC Stadium.

Campbell's 14 goals this season have fired Hull to fourth in the Championship to make promotion to the Premier League a realistic possibility.

Hull boss Phil Brown is keen to secure Campbell on a permanent deal, but the England Under-21 international is keen to prove he can be a success at Old Trafford.

"I am contracted to Manchester United for another two years and I can't say for sure what is going to happen there," Campbell - who also spent the 2006/07 season on loan at Royal Antwerp - said in the Daily Star.

"But I've come out on loan this season and done quite well for myself and the team. I wanted to get some first-team experience and go back to United a better player.

"Hopefully, with the experience I've gained, I will be able to go and compete for a place in the first team at Manchester United."

Campbell, though, acknowledges that he will face a tough task in forcing his way in front of Wayne Rooney and the Premier League's top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo in Ferguson's pecking order.

"I know that it will be difficult because of the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo," Campbell added.

"But I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I didn't go back and give it a try."
