Greening gears up for Battle Royale

Tue 15 Apr, 01:30 PM

West Brom skipper Jonathan Greening claims Tuesday night's derby with arch rivals Wolves 'is bigger' than last season's play-off battle. The Baggies knocked their fierce enemies out of the Championship play-off semi-finals last season, and also faced them in the FA Cup.

Tony Mowbray's troops fell at the final hurdle, though, losing to Derby in the play-off final at Wembley.

And after drawing 0-0 at The Hawthorns earlier this season, the Black Country rivals go head to head at Molineux on Tuesday with much more at stake.

Albion are one point behind leaders Stoke with a game in hand, while Wolves are three points adrift of sixth-placed Crystal Palace with two games in hand.

Bristol City, Hull and Watford are also breathing down Albion's neck, while Wolves are fighting for a play-off spot with Ipswich and Charlton.

Defeat for either side would be a huge blow to their promotion hopes, and Greening admits he wants to wake up on Wednesday morning looking down on the rest of their Championship rivals.

"It's probably bigger (than last season's play-offs)," said the former Middlesbrough midfielder. "If we win the game we go five points clear of Watford and three clear of Bristol City with three games left.

"That's the main aim - to be sitting clear of those teams tomorrow. And if we get a draw we're three points clear of Watford.

"We don't want to lose but we need to be positive, go for the win and hopefully get the three points.

"If we can do that it's a three-game season for everybody," he added in the Express and Star.
