Tykes boss may ring changes

Tue 15 Apr, 08:45 AM

Barnsley manager Simon Davey is considering changing a winning team for Tuesday night's crunch clash with promotion-chasing Hull at Oakwell. The Tykes' despair at losing to Cardiff in the FA Cup semi-finals was compounded by their descent into the Championship relegation places, but successive wins have lifted them to 17th - four points clear of the bottom three.

Striker Daniel Nardiello has recovered from a hamstring injury while winger Martin Devaney returns from a thigh strain, and Davey feels a fresh approach may be needed for their third match in a week.

"We will have to have a look at the lads and see how they are," he told the club's website. "They were very tired and fatigued after the Preston match. We may have to freshen a few things up."

Despite wins over Watford and Preston in the last week, Davey believes Barnsley need to add to their current tally of 52 points to stay up.

"We have played some fantastic football at times this season but 52 points will not be enough for us. We want more and we need more," he added.

"There will be someone relegated with 53 or 54 points this season. We have not passed that mark yet but we want to finish with 64. That is what we are aiming for.

"Hull have done well this season and we know that it will be a very difficult game. We were disappointed to lose at their place earlier in the year and we want to put that right."

The Tykes will definitely be without captain Brian Howard, who has recovered from an ankle problem only to be ruled out by illness, while winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce may also be given a rest.

Hull missed the chance to move into the automatic promotion places when they were held to a 1-1 draw by QPR on Saturday.

A Michael Turner equaliser in injury time salvaged a point for the Tigers, and boss Phil Brown believes their fighting spirit will hold them in good stead for the run-in.

"If you'd said to me at the start of the season that with four games to go, a win at Barnsley would take you into the top two, I'd have taken that. I think any manager in the Championship would have taken that scenario," he told the club's website.

"Of course you want to win every game but we've taken a point from Saturday. As well as that, we've shown that desire and determination not to get beat when we're not at our best.

"That will be a key factor between now and the end of the season."

Winger Richard Garcia (shoulder) and striker Henrik Pedersen (hamstring) are both injury doubts but Nick Barmby is fit.

Hull fans will have a close eye on Tuesday's other match with promotion rivals West Brom taking on play-off hopefuls Wolves in the Black Country derby.
