World champions Australia slipped to third place in the one-day rankings, their lowest since the International Cricket Council introduced ratings in October 2002.

On Monday Australia collapsed to their seventh defeat in nine matches against top-ranked South Africa this year and now lie third in the rankings behind India.

However, Australia will climb back to second if they win the last match in Johannesburg on Friday.

South Africa won Monday's fourth game by 61 runs to clinch the five-match series 3-1 with a match to spare.

Australia held the top spot for all but 10 months of the duration, including 52 straight months from October 2002 to January 2007, ICC said in a statement.

  3. If the Aussies slip down the rankings it will do them more good than harm, the suggestion that India & Sth Africa will dominate world cricket in the immediate future reeks of a supporter that loves his country, no bad thing, the reality is that neither country has given any indication that they are strong enough, particularly the 'yarpies' who are the world's best 'chokers', Ned Kelly

  4. The ICC ranking is quite faulty. This has kept Australia at the top based on past performances and not present form.

  5. It is only a matter of time before India and South Africa battle it out for the top two spots in all forms of the game.Australia hung on to the top spot because of the huge lead they had built up over the years which has now been wiped out.
