Walcott Goal Helps Beat Wales

Thu 15 May, 11:09 PM

Fabio Capello was at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground to watch two of his current squad score for England Under-21s in their 2-0 friendly victory over Wales.

Tom Huddlestone and Theo Walcott, both in the full squad for the internationals against the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, were on the scoresheet in the first half.

Huddlestone opened the scoring from the penalty spot, then Walcott doubled the lead for Stuart Pearce's youngsters when his finish deflected in.

England boss Capello also saw Joe Hart, Gabriel Agbonlahor and David Wheater play.

Pearce has backed his five players to feature under Capello when they meet up with the senior squad.

"We've got a squad of 31 in the seniors and the bottom line is you might lose a couple through injury - it's a perfect opportunity with the two matches to look at one or two of them.

"If any of these get on the pitch they will do themselves credit."

Wales Under-21 boss Brian Flynn believes his squad is closing the "great divide" between themselves and top European sides like England.

Flynn has overseen a huge improvement in Wales at this level during his three years in control, and they stand one win away from qualification for the UEFA championship play-offs.

The former Wrexham manager recalls the last time he pitted his squad against England, in August 2005 when Wales were outclassed 4-0 in his first game in charge.

Now he says: "Last time we played England was three years ago, also at Wrexham, on my first match in control and we lost 4-0.

"They were very, very good that night and were worthy winners. Then there was a huge divide between the sides, there isn't now.

"Quite a few of my Wales players could get into that England squad. They would not look out of place."
