Newcastle striker Michael Owen has denied a report that he is set to retire from football at the end of the season.
The Daily Express reported in their early edition that the England striker would become a full-time racehorse trainer and owner after quitting the game in the summer.
"Any suggestion or unfounded speculation that Michael Owen has any intention of quitting football is totally untrue and wrong," read a statement from Owen's management company Wasserman Media Group.
"Michael remains as committed to his football career as he ever has been and is deeply and professionally offended that anyone should suggest otherwise."
The statement continued: "Michael Owen has instructed lawyers and will take action against any publication which he feels inaccurately or unfairly suggested he is quitting football and is damaging to his professional reputation."
The response prompted a humiliating climbdown from the Express, who changed their later-edition back pages to lead on how Owen is keen to continue.

pianomusiclive, 90,000 and no trophies. Shows football fans are genuine in the North East, you glory supporting clown.
heyup clint 173,
combined 90,000 and no buckets in the cabinet, wonder what the fans think of that eh,still i suppose theres no where else to go,the directors of both clubs rub their grimy little hands together, all that cash, thats what attracted ashley, get the fans excited by buying the occasional whoops owen, that keeps them on the go,but the truth is the directors and owners couldnt give a @#$%,as long as their pockets are bulgeing with cash, your cash, your a big club alright, question is,big at what!!!!!!!!.
heyup cameron/wilmo/conolly,
do you get that sinking feeling, obscurity awaits,at least next season we wont be argueing about big clubs, the way newcy fans feel after today, they might want to crawl under the nearest rock, manu, now thats a big big club.
Cameron, your post 163 was one of your best. I'm off to Shearer's Bar to staeady the nerves then to my seat for a very nervy 90 mins! Haleygroves post 163, Newcastle and Sunderland are within ten minutes of each other and yet still pull a combined weekly attendance of 90,000 fans.(Despite either of them winning owt for years).
I give up, i really do - you just aren't listening . . . .club-team = BIG DIFFERENCE!!
Right i'm off to the match now, along with 52,000 others . . . . yes, a very small attendance for a very small club.
How many 'big' clubs would die for an attendance like that!
Hmm, me thinks it might just be the 2nd highest attendance of the day!

looks like the only way of getting rid of owen,is relegation.hes got nowhere else to go. if toon go down he wont stay,if they stay up,he will hang on forever till another top club takes the bait.oh my god!!!!
hey john o,connell 171
the whole of newcy this season has been a circus, the players are like elephants, the board are snakes, the manager a clown, the owner a seal clappity clap, but its sad,the audiance are not laughing.we think they should get their money back.??????
hey cameron,
If manu did not win anything in the next forty years,i doubt very much that their ground would ever be filled, and, they would probably disappear into obscurity just like newcastle is about to,Hey up, what keeps the grounds full, only success no matter what your name is,newcy being a one city club are fortunate undeed that they have no real competition,if newcy were in london for,eg you would have your work cut out to sell a hot dog heyup, arsenal chelsea tottenham fulham to name but a few,put newcy in there and the place would be EMPTY
hey neutral florence,
you cannot take away the trophy factor, all fans will tell you this is the be all and end all of a clubs, teams, players measure of success, regardless of turnover, size etc.eg stretford end united put 500,000 bums on seats every week, their turnover is double that of any of the big 4,but they are nowhere in the league,?are they a great club..??????........................................... ....................................................??? ?????????????who,........precisely.
hey cameron/wilmo
big club/massive club/giants/huge/great/none of this matters, wilmo is right, its whats in the cabinet/silverware/honours that makes a club.i would say to settle your argument change the criteria to outstanding, newcastle cannot compete on these grounds can they, even on a 100,000 seater they would not compare with the likes of manu/liv/ars/chelsk,magic 4 but they are good at putting bums on seats, granted.but lack of honours puts toon well down the lists in terms of big club etc.!
From a purely neutral point of veiw.. id have to say that i agree with what cameron w is saying and the rest of yous just arnt getting the point. eg: he says hes not talking about trophies etc then the next guy makes an argument based on.. wait for it... trophies.. lmao!!! You been told by comment 170

well done michael!! he wont quit because he is the best finisher at newcastle. martins provides pace, viduka gives skill but owen finishes the chances, he just needs to do less himself and more shootin =)...
As a Toon fan i will admit that if Owen could play for a club of his choice, it wouldn't be us. He came to Newcastle because we were prepared to pay a bigger fee than any other club and pay him a bigger salary than anyone else and judging by what he has given us over the last four years, You can see we were wrong and they were right.
I would like to think we had learned our lesson but in January, we were trying to sign him up again for more of the same for £90.000 a week.
We have a very important game on Saturday and I dont think the Owen circus should distract our players. He should be dropped with Martins rightly taking his place. Iv'e no doubt Owen will be gone before the start of next season but if we stay up, Martins will still be here making the result a lot more important to him, and besides I personally believe that their would be a goal or two from Viduka and Martins up front but I'm not at all confident with Owen starting.

There you go yet again!
For crying out loud, don't you read man!
First of all, it was YOU who started this nonsense, so it is you and YOUR paranoia matey.
Secondly we are discussing CLUBS and NOT TEAMS!!
I am not denying the fact that in terms of TEAM success, Newcastle United is a pathetically miniscule TEAM - never won anything for 40 years nor likely to for the considerable future. I am not denying that, never have done! Now read this carefully you absolute biased, closed-minded, stubborn fool - go to the Deloittes TOP-20 CLUBS in the world in term of financial turnover - in there you will find a certain NUFC, been in there for years pal! This is what defines big 'CLUBS', it's got absolutely NOTHING to do with teams or team success.
Tell me, If man united win nowt for the next 40 years but still pull in 75,000 and remain the most powerful club in the footballing commercial world, will you then consider them to be a 'small club' - by your criteria you would have to surely, and we all know that would be wrong!
Even ferguson states NUFC are a 'massive club' - he said it not me; are you doubting the words of the great man?
As for this poppycock that we at NUFC believe we have a divine right to be in the Premier League - give me ONE single shred of eveidence to back that up. Come to SJP tomorrow and see what the English Premier League means to us, and gauge the humility that oozes from the terraces - it is a privilege to play in the EPL and that is why we are fighting for our lives.
And to finish with, i actually rate Blackpool as a big club with absolutely masses of untapped potential.
Now i am tired with this.
Just remember, Club-Team . . . there is a world of difference!
cameron w.
and yes I have been to Old Trafford, and St James's, both very nice stadiums!.... its just that they fill the one in manchester with silverware!
must be a north west thing!
TIT!
cameron w.
I'm a Blackpool fan. small club, small squad and a small ground. I think we are punching above our weight in the championship! but I'm being realistic, How on earth can you not judge a team by it's success? that is the whole point of the game! A point you just don't get!
You think that its Newcastles divine right to be in the Premiership!
Where does your paranoia come from regarding Manchester United??? are you feeling insecure?
Divvy
