Grimsby chairman John Fenty is keen to avoid paying out big money for players this summer following the club's narrow escape from relegation.

Fenty allowed manager Mike Newell to make a number of loan signings from higher-ranked clubs in a bid to help the Mariners beat the drop.

But the likes of Preston's Wayne Henderson and Leeds' Peter Sweeney came at a significant cost and while Fenty does not want to sell his club short, he is reluctant to pay extravagant wages next season.

"We were in a serious predicament last season," he told PA Sport. "It wasn't a question of how much, it was a question of what we needed to do, but some of those players are likely to be unaffordable for a club at this level.

"They were brought to this club, by and large, because of the predicament we were in. It wasn't a question of cost, it was `let's get ourselves out of trouble'.

"We backed the manager to that extent but we would expect a planned process this summer and players to be brought in that fit a rational budget for a football club at our level. That is not to say that we're being negative in any way, shape or form. If other clubs can do it, so can we."
