Confederations Cup - Egypt lodge protest over penalty

Egypt have lodged a protest with Confederations Cup organisers after their 4-3 defeat by Brazil, claiming Brazil's late penalty winner was awarded illegally on the basis of video evidence.

Egypt coach Hassan Shehata said his team were not contesting English referee Howard Webb's decision to award Brazil a penalty when substitute Ahmed Al Muhamadi stopped a shot on his goal line with his arm.

Al Muhamadi collapsed on the ground as if struck in the face and injured.

But Shehata said Webb and his linesman had both signalled a corner and only changed the decision after being told by the fourth official of the handball.

"As far as I am aware there is no rule allowing video evidence", Shehata said. "We're not contesting the referee's decision but the way it was made. Or maybe the rules have changed and nobody has told us."

Kaka (pictured) stepped up to coolly slot the penalty home and give Brazil a last gasp victory.

  2. Egypt were for their best and i saw them a winning­ team. ON The first half of the game the Brazilian were­ the best. The Egptians made their thoughts on the­ second half of the game and they were performing to­ their highst level. Taking a protest will be a waste as­ the penality was clear and the referee's decision­ was good. Egyptians you really deserve tobe the best­ team in Africa keep it up....

  3. I really hope FIFA will employ a video judge when it­ comes to off-side decisions and fouls. If the ref is in­ doubt that a goal is off- side or on-side, then, as in­ rugby, he should signal a request for a judgement on a­ close close.

  13. I watched the game. It was a clean penalty. But the­ referee had initially ruled out for a cornr. Why­ changed his mind I don't know. This is the area (I­ think) the Pharoahs should base their protest. Changing­ mind after first decision is not allowed in the game. ­ This is incompetence on Howeb. Albeit, the Egyptians­ played a game of their lives. I thumb for them for­ proving the world that there is real football in­ Africa. Hope they transfer this spirit to all other­ games. Cheers!

    then for sure you want­ reach anything Egypt played a great game and the­ brazilians too arrogant won this game by a mere luck­ and a bit of help from the refree who changed his mind­ signaling intially a corener then a penalty to help­ Brazil win
    Bravo Brazil but you will not always be­ lucky like that.( wiat for Spain & Italy)
    for sure­ Spain is the best team in this Tournament I wish I can­ see them playing against arrogant and crappy team of­ Brazil.
    Italy should beat Brazil based on the poor­ level of playing we saw against Egypt.

  19. Congratulations to Brazil and well done Egypt for­ playing good game. For the good of the game, I liked­ the fact that Egypt displayed good football and gave­ Brazil a challenge. They should work on qualifying for­ the 2010 WC and their next match against Italy. The­ penalty whether awarded later on or what, Brazil­ deserved the penalty and they won. So what is the coach­ saying? Cheat and don't get caught or it's not­ fair to get caught in the wrong way? Brazil won and­ beware Italy and Brazil will go through.   20. Brazil will not go for the semifinal only Egypt and­ Italy. So that was their only win. Egypt will hammer­ USA: 2-1, then hammer Italy 1-0, Brazil will get­ hammered by Italy 0-1, drew with USA 0-0, remaining­ only with 4 points. So is Egypt and Italy at last going­ through.
