Last year's Wimbledon star Chris Eaton was knocked out of qualifying for this year's tournament 6-4 6-2 by Frenchman Stephane Robert at the first hurdle.
A year ago the Briton reached the second round after qualifying but there will be no repeat after the loss at Roehampton.
There were however victories for his fellow Britons Josh Milton, Dan Cox, Marcus Willis and Alex Slabinsky.
Teenager Milton, who earned a wildcard for the tournament, beat 30th seed Alexandre Sidorenko 2-6 7-6 (4) 6-1.
Cox edged through against Ireland's Conor Niland 6-3 1-6 8-6 while Marcus Willis also triumphed in a tight encounter, 7-6 (7) 7-6 (8-6) against American Amer Delic.
Slabinsky won in straight sets 6-4 6-4 versus Romanian Adrian Cruciat.
Of the other Britons in action at Roehampton, Richard Bloomfield lost to Dieter Kindlmann and Daniel Smethurst went out to Marco Chiudinelli.
The places of Brits Alex Bogdanovic, Joshua Goodall, James Ward and Daniel Evans at Wimbledon are already assured, with the first three all featuring at this week's tournament in Eastbourne.

Really ?lol.........Just heard that he is ho-oking up with a nice gi-rl on the inter-esting cl-ub called: __Tallconnect Co M__, really ? Sounds it is a famoaus on-line service.
what a shame he did well last year at wimbledon second round i think.
I agree janice 100 %, the players should take the tournaments abroad seriously if they want a tennis career.
Such tosh why the hell does he wait just Wimbldone what happens to him throughout the year, not effort to drop in ranking but wants to shine only at Wimbledon. British player should be ashamed really, other nations with very little support fight harder and because our too much luxury the players fail to want it that much more.
