League One - Barnes confirmed as Tranmere boss

Eurosport - Mon, 15 Jun 18:14:00 2009

John Barnes has been confirmed as manager of League One outfit Tranmere.

FOOTBALL John Barnes - 0

The former England and Liverpool winger, who recently ended his short stint as head coach of Jamaica, has been out of club management since being sacked by Celtic in February 2000.

His dismissal from the Scottish giants followed a humiliating Scottish Cup defeat to Inverness.

The 45-year-old will now be forced to work to a limited budget at Prenton Park.

Tranmere, who narrowly failed to make the play-offs on the final day of last season, recently sacked Ronnie Moore after three years in charge of the Merseyside club.

Barnes's former Liverpool team-mate and ex-Tranmere midfielder Jason McAteer has been named assistant-manager.

  2. I am not a tranmere fan but a football fan & I can easily see that this is a terrible mistake as an appointment. I seriously doubt Barnes in the man to drive the club forward. It is very likely he will not see the season out & I suspect he will get sacked. Tranmere supporters cant me happy with the appointment. How can you have a Jamaican man, living in Liverpool, played for England who speaks with a weird almost Irish accent? Stay clear if it were my club.

  3. Lets hope Peter Johnson has a long term plan. That plan selling to Steve Macmanaman, Robbie Fowler and Jason Mcateer which has been rumoured for a whilst. Getting Barnes in may help as he will get to know the structure of the club and what needs to be changed to drive it forward.

Ohh, does any Rovers fan not find it weird that Goodison did that stupid challenge to get sent off against Hereford. If he had not been sent off, played and got us to the playoff final he would have missed a Jamaica game playing for Barnes. Strange one that. As Nick off the Apprentice once said.... I'll leave that with you.

  7. Tranmere relegated by February. John Barnes is not a football manager. End of story.

  8. Here are Johns tactics -

You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They'll always hit you and hurt you
    Defend and attack
Theres only one way to beat them
    Get round the back
    Catch me if you can
    Cos' I'm the Tranmere man
    And what you're looking at
    Is the master plan
    We ain't no hooligans
    This ain't a football song
    Three lions on my chest
I know we can't go wrong

  9. Good luck John Barnes.

  11. Brother John Barnes will make a great manager whoever he manages if it's Tranmere Rovers.

As a player, Barnes will so fast and he scored some great goals when he played for both Watford and Liverpool.

I think he was unfairly treated at Celtic, because he wasn't given a chance to prove himself.

But I think whoever he's manages Barnes, he was a great player and also going back to his roots and managing the Jamaican football team.

I wish Brother John Barnes all the best and enough respect.
