Lions shrug off injury woes

Eurosport - Mon, 15 Jun 15:12:00 2009

The British and Irish Lions could have a clean bill of health heading into next Saturday's first Test against world champions South Africa.

Warren Gatland - Lions 2009 - 0

Only full-back Rob Kearney is currently unavailable for the Lions' next game - an appointment with the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.

Kearney suffered a dead leg during the 26-23 victory over Western Province on Saturday, but he is expected to regain full fitness in the next few days.

Scotland scrum-half Mike Blair, meanwhile, faces a late test on his ankle to determine whether or not he will be ready for Port Elizabeth.

But Lions doctor Gary O'Driscoll has delivered an upbeat overall assessment as the tourists hurtle headlong towards the business end of their 10-match trip.

"Rob Kearney took a knee straight into his left thigh that has given him a dead leg. It was the sensible thing to take him off," said O'Driscoll.

"He has a full range of movement in the thigh today, and the initial signs are he should be available for later in the week.

"Mike Blair has a very mild sprain. The coaching staff have given us until Tuesday morning to do a final fitness test, so there is every chance he will be available for then."

  2. Good grief! Guys... just enjoy the rugby, what's all this bickering about??? I'm sure the Boks haven't been lounging on their sunbeds for the past 3 or 4 weeks, you know! It WILL be hard and hopefully more entertaining than the 07 world cup final!!

  3. Some folk see racism in everything. Especially they see it when someone disagrees with them.

  4. sugruejames55, give ai a break. South Africans do not understand the complexity of Irish politics no more than most Europeans understand South African issues. Don't forget that despite, Kyle, Millar, McBride, Gibson, Slattery et al, the team was still called the British Lions up to 1997.
I'll challenge him about the Boks being ready though. The super 14 final was on May 30th so it'll be 3 weeks since any Bulls Bok has played and over 5 weeks since the rest of them turned out. They'll be rusty all right and probably lose the 1st test because of it. My guess is that they'll win the next two though.

Nonsense. Why do you say the Lions are getting big-gheaded? Nothing has been said that could make anyone normal think that. The Lions squad does contain quite a few players who have played in world cups - of course it does, it contains the best Britain & Ireland has to offer! The problem is, rugby is a team game and many of them have not played together before. You also say that the local county teams are what makes up the (SA) test teams starting next week, but the truth is that potential SA team members have been kept back to prevent injuries etc.

Your guess may be right and the Lions might get beaten by the World Champions, but I'm sure it won't be all one-sided... and they might even win

  8. The lions sent a team consisting of 75%+ world cup players. Playing against local county teams. They are getting big headed now. Yes they beat the local county teams, wich if they didnt would have been a right scham.
Now they up against a much stronger more combined team, the forget how strong and enduring the SPRINGBOKS are. The Springboks are not taking this lions tour as a defeat. The local county teams are what makes up the test team starting next week. They have all had a good practice round against the lions.
I still think the lions will buckle on saturday, but I might be wrong.
As for BrianD's comments, namibia is a perfect team to warm up against. same as the lions playing county teams.
i think my money will be on Springboks this weekend.

From wernmarti, on Mon 15 Jun 10:53AM
  9. Why on earth should it be a surprise to the Springbox that the Lions are in good shape and match fit? Did they expect there to be injuries and so the Lions would not have a full compliment from whom to select a team- rubbish.
As to the Springbox resting for a few weeks whilst being together, so what?

Both teams will be in prime condition and let the best one win fair and square.

  10. i guess the springboks are in for a little surprise. the british lions are in good shape and are already match fit, what have the springboks done?????? nothing really and you call the game in namibia a warm up, here's laughing at you coach. get your act together man
