Petrova knocks out Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic was dumped out of WTA Eastbourne at the first-round stage 6-1 4-6 6-4 by Nadia Petrova ahead of next week's Wimbledon.

Ivanovic, who recently dropped to 13th in the world rankings and split with coach Craig Kardon, was unseeded and drawn against the world number 10.

The Serb was leading 4-1 in the deciding set and seemed set to progress but lost concentration and ended up losing 6-1 4-6 6-4.

"I think I could have played a lot better and that is why I was a little bit disappointed because I was practising really well," the former world number one said.

Petrova will face either Ai Sugiyama or Vera Dushevina in round two.

Top seed Elena Dementieva went through 6-2 6-2 against Russian countrywoman Maria Kirilenko and will next play Virginie Razzano, who beat fellow Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 7-6 (3) 6-2.

"It is always fun to play on grass," said Dementieva. "It just takes a longer time before you really feel confident about the movement.

"I think that was a good match for the first one on grass."

Samantha Stosur of Australia defeated Germany's Sabine Lisicki 6-2 6-1 while Zheng Jie of China beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 6-2.

    She has no chance competing with players like­ Vika Azarenka or Petrova
    the lucky year for her is­ already gone.
    Also one should not compare this one time­ lucky winner with players like venus -sharapove-­ ect
    she is still a beginner but ( no big expectation )­ there are so many new grea players to come).

  4. its really hard to shift from clay to grass, sorry­ sveta i wish u well on wimbledon. the last player who­ did win from from clay and grass back to back was nadal­ last year when he defeated roger and for women was­ serena 2002 when she won the rg02 then wimbeldon 02 win­ over venus!!

  5. I think the women are mad at the men being at their­ tournament this year at eastbourne.Hope Vika Amelie­ Elena and Nadia do well.Kuzzie out what a shame.
    Been­ going to eastbourne for 10 years but not this year to­ many hospital appointments.Just as well would be very­ disappointed so far.

  6. Well i have been going to eastbourne for the past 10­ years.Unable to go this year as i have lots of hospital­ appointments.Just as well i didn't go what a shock­ Jankovic and Ivanovic going out in the first­ round.
