World number four Novak Djokovic wrote off his Wimbledon chances after slumping to a 6-3 6-7(4) 6-1 defeat to Germany's Tommy Haas in the ATP Halle grasscourt final.
The Serbian, who was top seed in the absence of Roger Federer, had made hard work of beating qualifier Olivier Rochus from Belgium in his semi-final and his faltering form continued on grass with Wimbledon just a week away.
"Because I went out early there last year and because I didn't play at my top-level here, I would definitely not rate myself as a favourite for the title in London," said former Australian Open champion Djokovic.
"One of the good things I will take out of this week is the practice I got for Wimbledon.
"There's a lot of things I should have done better against Tommy. You don't have much chance if you return like that against an aggressive player like him."
Haas admitted he would be leaving Halle with a smile on his face after winning his first tournament since Memphis in 2007 and having also defeated top-ten player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round here.
"It is unbelievable - I feel really good and I will leave Halle with a smile on my face," admitted Haas in front of a delighted crowd with Wimbledon set to start on June 22.
"When I travelled here, I would have never believed that I would end the week with the title. To win in front of German fans against a player like Novak is fantastic, especially in a final.
"I will enjoy this moment, because you never know how many more of them will come.
"I am not thinking about Wimbledon yet, but the tournament victory will of course give me a lot of confidence."

OK Silva.. I`m really loking forward their matches in the future.. really :-)
Ops... I shall say, may the best win!!!
@ Igor K, Cool, mate! No insulting anymore, but please be more realistic and respectful towards Fed. He has proved himself more than enough to deserve the respect of real tennis supporters. Keep it cool and long live the king: Roger Federer!
@ gione.silva fine by me, just stop insulting with such words!
I would also like to see them in the semmies.. ofcourse Fed is a big favorit on grass.. but it would be a great match to see :-)
I would love to see Djokoshit play Fed in the semis... Just to prove his devoted fans that Djoko is not even near to Fed on grass. The only threat to Fed this year is Murray or Tsonga. Everybody else, Fed will just walk over! Again, there is no luck in tennis! This is not gambling! The best always win!!!
I Admit I wrote that sentence first time, when Federer really looked like completely lost case (last year).. now he is back on track.. and I must pay a tribute to him being really taught mentally to take advantage after all drops he suffered in last year or more !
.. but I can not lose the filling that some guys really learned how to play him, how to disrupt his attacking tennis.. Others from top four found his weak spots.. if he is not leading the game, not having indicative, have to deal with few deep balls near the baseline during rally – then he seems to me still like worst from top four in defensive situations…sorry ! And it happened many times in last year and a half, not only against Nadal, Muray, Djokovic. They will be serious barrier for him on any GS he is playing, no matter tri setter is a different animal ;-)
Even other three guys were kicked relative early on RG (if exclude Murray who achieved really good result on Clay), after all I think he would have really serious problems if he met any of them (much more serious then with Hass or Del Potro) .. so he was still lucky to me, or fortunate, whatever...
..that was the main reason I was pointing about Lucky RG... If I hurt someone’s fillings (I surely did), I’m sorry !
Novak was also lucky few times in Halle, but he finally didn’t take advantage in third set with Hass, because he didn’t fight hard enough !
On Grass Federer is clear favourite if Nadal didn’t recover fully.. but Murray really advanced in everything, will see.. And if Novak is to meat Fed, we will see a real fight, not like this embarrassment in Halle, I’m sure !
Igor,i think it is a little harsh to say Fed was "lucky" to win the French, sure it may have been fortunate that Murray Nadal and Djoko were knocked out,but in reality none of them were good enough to get the opportunity to play Federer,in short, the four best players reached the semis, then the two best advanced to the final, and ultimately ,the best player won the tournament.Federer in my opinion, truly deserved the title after his incredible fightback against Haas, his performance against Monfils and the epic with Delpo, none of that can be construed as luck.
On the subject of Djoko,i believe that changing his racket after his most succesfull spell in his carreer was misguided,it was a crazy thing to do.Also i agree ,it might be the right time for him to find a quality coach,he def needs to change something.
Why do so many of you so called tennis fans hate Novak Djokovic so much he is such a nice young man.Come on Novak you can do it good luck at wimbledon.
Mr. Igor K thinks he knows a lot about tennis... Poor kid, knows nothing!!! Since he started his hate against Fed, he has only proved to be wrong again and again. And guess what: Fed is gonna win again! How can he say Novak and Murray are better than Roger? Are you crazy man? Novak is a nobody in tennis! One slam wonder. Murray still has a lot to prove. 'Besides Nadal, Murray and Novak...' What a whole lot of c r a p!!! The only time Novak beat Roger in a slam, was when Roger was ill. Murray hasn't done yet. If you say Nadal is the man, ok, I respect... but, Nadal is not gonna have a long carer like Roger and will never reach 12 slams. I could bet on that right now! Keep dreaming dear Djokoshit fans... Sorry for you lot...
@nick, u might see things from a different perspective. After all, NADAL won the French Open four times! 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 ... AND he won Australian Open this year!
@ wasdwasdedsfedsf - 5 match point saved are not only luck, but says for it self that player has enormous skills to cope with the situation when most needed.. Novak and of course Federer and some other players has those qualities – Lucky I said for Federer because all REAL opponents dropped from his part of draw on RG (of course I’m thinking on Nadal, Novak and Murray), not because he saved one match point against Hass.. surely you got to have amount of luck for that, but then you have to take control.. and great players then grab it in their favour like Federe did. Well done !
…That what you are quoting now I have written long before Federer took Roland Garos.. but I can claim the same again: "Besides Nadal, Novak and Murray he is no favourite on ANY GS anymore, and he can win another GS only with huge amount of luck" .. but of course if those guys are fit and in form.. if not, he will just walk over !
Why Am I keep pointing this ? because this is REAL and COMPLETE opposing finally – he didn’t have such opposition until last two years.. only blind don’t want to see it and approves Fed`s lover results with other excuses.. if you want to keep one eye closed to this "best ever player", then my claims are @#$% to you of course !
He can not pass in a row both Murray, or Novak, and then Nadal.. no freaking way man ! They became experts for beating him ;-)
And why is Federer then favourite for me on Wimbledon`09:
- because he will play more relaxed after finally winning RG
- Nadal seems having knees problems still
- Novak, I must say sucks on grass big-time (if exclude Queens last year) - he doesn’t move properly and no shoes can fix this “skating”. Still I believe this will be his best Wimbledon so far !
So yes finally, Federer is the main favourite for me.. only if he survives Murray scare ;-)
Djokoshit is a S H I T player! He is not gonna win anything! His fans will have to cry and wait for the Serbian tournament next year. Hahahaha.... Fed rules! Long Live the King: Roger Federer!!!
Well done Haas, you deserve it. Roll on Wimbledon, anyone wanna put some outside bets on Murray winning, it doesnt seem that stupid to me!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO MURRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey igor you didnt see my reply.
"I think it is enough said about Federer.. If you remember our discussions well, you surely remember that I said: "besides Nadal, Novak and Murray, and other top players, he can win another GS with only enormous amount of luck"
Oh so thats why hes a pretty damn big favourtie for wimbledon, and a favourite for US open? The one that is the most likely to win is the least needing of luck, so please explain your thoughts on that sentance.
"novak_djokovic - ooh I should have known you are here with your fake accounts.. when I saw three negative in 2 minutes ;-) "
yep. The fact that your post was retardbad as always played no part.
"please read comment number 2.. I think you agree :-)"
You are not a legend for saving 5 match points in a match by any degree, please prove to me how that works. Please prove to me how it works AT ALL that saving matchpoints is any kind of a sign of a good thing or that the player is good.
Congratulations to Haas, he played brilliantly yesterday and I hope he will continue in such a way. Novak was not too bad, worming up is finished, see them all at Wimbledon.
#ndizvozvo4life:
you are so brave person who comes here only to insult Serbian. But, if you are so courageous, how you comment that from the previous held tennis tournaments only Blake as American reched final and that after more than 30 years Murray as Britain won in London, poor you.
Federer doesn't have to beat the top players to still be considered the greatest5. His best year was 2006. In 2007 he got three slams but his level had still slightly dropped from his peak. Nadal being younger kept improving after this time. For a player of 27 to continually beat rising younger stars isn't going to happen unless you've got a massive booming serve(Sampras) The only true record of greatness is trophies. Federer has 14 slams, that speaks for itself and is a fact that cannot compare to an opinion
@ carlos480bc thanks for you kind words.. sorry but I can not be on Federer`s side, especially I couldn’t` on this RG.. I have opinion of my own about him.. but it is a other story.. sorry for hurting someone’s fillings ! I respect his game when he is destroying opponents - I can not be against wins he disserved in that fashion, and I admire his elegance pretty much. But this RG was different story and still he was very lucky to me...On the other side, match with Monfils, then Finals - I can say only BRAVO for the way he played, very determent..
.. for Wimbledon, I think he is favourite number one, he will definitely play more relaxed; Murray is second favourite because Nadal has injury problems (really hope he will be ready fully). Del Potro advanced phenomenal on clay…But if it comes to Federer : Murray match, it will be really tough for Federer..
Novak must change something.. on grass he just can not accommodate properly.. he brought his clay performance on even higher level, but grass is something different … will see.. hope he will change his team as soon and priper to shine on hard court again !
I wouldn't write off anyone from the top 4. But you see what happened at last grandlslam. Murray and Djokovic hailed as rising stars fell off rather early, Nadal shockingly too and the cake was there for Federer. Everything can happen. I can say that Murray has something to say after winning at Queens. I wonder if Federer is going to be that relaxed as he promised - he got his last slam but he knows he must get some wins over the top guys too.
No.12 Nadal lost two tournaments (getting to the final in one of them and after three consecutive wins) and you are already writing him off? Djokovic is clearly on a slump, but he is a good player let's hope he wakes up soon.
Nadal is feeling the heat as number 1 ...and his knees are a real problem for him. His career will be short. I think he's already peaked and is on the way down. Djoko still does not have the game for grass and lacks mental toughness. So it's either Federer, now with nothing to prove to the world or a newly confident Murray who will win Wimbledon. I put Fed there by a small margin over the Scot as he is a better and more experienced 5 set, 7 match winner. Should be interesting this year...
