Gunners to rival Reds for Barry

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed that Arsenal are set to rival Liverpool in the race to sign £18million-rated star Gareth Barry.The Reds have made no secret of their desire to land the England midfielder and have been locked in negotiations with Villa over the player's sale for several weeks.

O'Neill admits that a deal still had not been struck between the two clubs, although he was hopeful of a resolution soon.

Over the weekend, the Gunners were reportedly set to enter the race for Barry by making an offer, with right-back Justin Hoyte potentially involved in the deal as part-exchange.

And O'Neill has revealed that Arsene Wenger's assistant manager Pat Rice spoke with the club, intimating that Arsenal could be set to step their interest in Barry as they look for a replacement for Mathieu Flamini.

"Myself and Steve Walford both know Arsene Wenger's assistant Pat Rice," O'Neill told The Sun.

"He phoned Steve to ask how the Liverpool thing had gone and said that they might show an interest.

"At the end of the conversation Arsenal said 'that's fine' and that they'll let us know. That is exactly what happened."

I agree, Wenger is a racist stingebag who would never go for an english player, but, on saying that, if UEFA enforce this new ruling about limiting foreign players, then wenger is fooked left, right,and centre...so maybe their is truth in o'neils words...either way, it doesn't matter...the mighty reds don't need him...Gerrard might be a bit upset about it, but he'll just have to sleep in alonso's bed for a bit longer...

  6. Me think the bog trotter is playing games and creating some fictional competition to get Liverpool to cough up! Pat Rice asking his mate how the Liverpool thing is going aint a bid!!! Barry is English and will cost over 2.5 mill so thats Arsenal out the game!!! If you are ernest you just put a bid in of 18 mill and then talk to the player ...Its as easy as that!! The fact is that Barry aint a bad player but he aint worth that money...He aint worth 15 plus Finnan so i suggest the pixie bog trotter takes the money before we withdraw the offer!!!!

  9. every red knows the teams shortcomings in the last few years has been width.we need to get wide players with quality,like bently and villa.defensively we are well covered.barry is a good addition but up front we are short.i would try babel up front if money is an issue.
