Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has given up hope of signing Christophe Berra as new Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo is unwilling to sell the defender.McCarthy has been chasing the highly-rated centre-half all summer and has seen one bid rejected for the player.
Laszlo is keen to keep hold of his skipper, though, and McCarthy is ready to switch his attentions elsewhere as he looks for defensive reinforcements.
"I'm still hopeful of getting another one (defender] in. We had a bid in for Berra, but that deal is dead," McCarthy told the Scotsman.
"The deal won't be done at all. Hearts are saying he won't be going anywhere, so I've moved on.
"Who we get I don't know yet. It might be that someone comes from completely out of the woodwork from somewhere else which has never been mentioned.
"There are no other bids in at all. For the moment, the deal is dead as far as I'm concerned and we're looking elsewhere."

Wolves will regret not offering Hearts the full msarket value for Berra. They had a chance when Hearts were managerless but their penny pinching has cost them!
