Saddlers striker keen to improve

Tue 15 Jul, 06:15 PM

Striker Troy Deeney insists Walsall must look to better their 12th-place finish last season while still aiming for promotion. The Saddlers were challenging for a play-off place last term before a dramatic dip in fortunes towards the end of the season saw them fall to a disappointing mid-table finish.

And while Deeney is confident the club can again challenge for promotion he is well aware that with such a strong division, Walsall must primarily look to finish higher than last term.

"I think, firstly, we've got to beat 12th, that's our benchmark now," said Deeney.

"We've got to push on again, but there are some top teams in League One next season. You've got the three who came down from the Championship, you've still got Leeds and Carlisle, and you've got MK Dons, Peterborough and Hereford who have all come up.

"It's going to be an interesting league."
