PORTSMOUTH, England (AFP) - Nigeria forward Nwankwo Kanu is set to sign a new one year contract with FA Cup winners Portsmouth according to manager Harry Redknapp.
Although Kanu - who scored the goal that gave Pompey a 1-0 win over Cardiff in the FA Cup final - made the number of appearances required to earn him a new contract offer, reports in Nigeria suggested he was holding out for a two-year deal.
The recent arrivals at Portsmouth of strikers Peter Crouch and Ben Sahar had cast further doubt over the 31-year-old's future.
But Redknapp told The News: "Peter (Storrie, the chief executive) is sorting it out. As far as I know he's going to sign for another year and I want to keep him here.
"He's a good player, he's still got a part to play and gives you something different."

Put kanu down like a dog? I bet that came from somebody who doesnt know the first thing about football. Yes i do agree that Kanu is one of the best players to come out of Africa. He may not be as quick or as agile as he once was, but I doubt if there is anyone in the premiership today with the same dexterity and ball sense that he is got.May be Zola,Henry, Okocha, but again they've all left. On second thought, Ronaldo is there!
Kanu is one of the best footballers that africa has produced.
kanu is a horrible terrible player. he should be put down.. like an old dog.
I remember Kanu when he was at Arsenal
Kanu (Papilo) you got to sought yourself out very fast as time is running out on your future at Pumpey. All these English managers are a very sets of fun, they admire and use you are better or best and quickly dump you like a pearl of orange when your performance drops. Look how former Bolton manager Allad dumped Okocha. With the recent arrivals at Pumpey you got to watch the butchers knife before it is raised on you.
kanu is one of the best striker
