Gunners Hint At Barry Bid

Tue 15 Jul, 09:09 AM

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed Arsenal have hinted they may enter the race to sign midfielder Gareth Barry.

Liverpool have made no secret of their desire to land Barry, and have been locked in negotiations with Villa over the player's sale for several weeks.

O'Neill said on Saturday that a deal still had not been struck between the two clubs, although he was hopeful of a resolution soon.

The Gunners were then linked with a move for England international Barry, with right-back Justin Hoyte potentially involved in the deal as part-exchange.

And O'Neill has now revealed Arsene Wenger's assistant manager Pat Rice has intimated Arsenal could be set to step their interest.

"Myself and (first-team coach) Steve Walford both know Arsene Wenger's assistant Pat Rice," O'Neill told The Sun.

"He phoned Steve to ask how the Liverpool thing had gone and said that they might show an interest.

"At the end of the conversation Arsenal said 'that's fine' and that they'll let us know."

  3. Barry to any team except Liverpool... That oughta teach the Rat Taz a lesson not to fool with Martin O'Neil. Serves pool right, if Barry scores against them and prevents them from winning ANYTHING next season, with which ever other teams...

  7. Part-ex Hoyte for Barry. Hoyte will never be a Top Three player. Barry already is!

  8. I'd happily see Hoyte go to Aston Villa in part-ex for Gareth Barry. Hoyte might make the grade at a a lower club but not in a Top Three club.

I think Barry is vastly improved and can do a better job than Flamini did last year in the same sort of position, plus Barry has a better idea where the goal is when attacking.
