Allardyce eyeing striking reinforcements

Wed 15 Jul, 11:45 AM

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce remains determined to boost his attacking options before the start of the season.

The departures of Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire have left him thin on the ground in that area.

Jason Roberts, who scored twice in the defeat of Cambridge in a friendly on Tuesday, and Benni McCarthy have the slots very much to themselves at the moment.

Allardyce told the Lancashire Telegraph: "We have got quality, experienced Premier League footballers who can play up front and score goals. But there are only two of them.

"You generally need four strikers because you don't want to run into the problems we had last season, with having to play (defender) Chris Samba up front."

Meanwhile, academy manager Bobby Downes is leaving the club by mutual consent after 12 years. Midfielder David Dunn was one of a number of players he saw progress to the first team.

  2. Big Sham wants to stop eyeing and start buying. If we are thin on the ground now, what were we last season, when we almost went down.Would he accept advice about players who could be a part of rovers next season from informed fans of the club.He cannot keep tabs on every player, but other people could play a valuable role in this respect.
