Murty makes Saints bow

Wed 15 Jul, 10:09 AM

Graeme Murty played his first game for Southampton in the goalless friendly draw at Cheltenham on Tuesday night.

The 34-year-old full-back, who is on trial with Saints after being released by Reading at the end of last season, got 80 minutes under his belt at Whaddon Road.

"I thought the whole back four performed efficiently and Graeme Murty did well for the period he was on," said caretaker boss Stewart Henderson.

Olly Lancashire, Wayne Thomas, Lloyd James and Adam Lallana were also named in the starting line-up while Simon Gillett and Grzegorz Rasiak came on for the second half.

"It was a hard game in as much as they played very direct. They don't mess about and play it forward as much as possible," added Henderson.

"It was a valuable exercise because it certainly wasn't low-key. Both sides put a lot of effort in and I'm sure our lads will have benefitted greatly from it."

  1. It's a great thing that Saints were able to turn up at all! Now the club has been saved, good luck luck to the club in the coming season. I hope we get a good new manager (tho I do feel Mark Wotte should have been given a shot).
