Yorkshire faced victory target of 191 after Daryl Mitchell made a top score of 49 for Worcestershire Royals in the floodlit NatWest Pro40 Division One match at New Road.

The Royals, restricted to 190 for nine after winning the toss, made the worst possible start when Vikram Solanki edged the first ball of the game to Jacques Rudolph at first slip off Deon Kruis.

The Worcestershire skipper's quick-fire dismissal, however, heralded the beginning of a valuable partnership between Steve Davies and Stephen Moore.

Davies, however, had a fortunate let-off when he was dropped on the mid-wicket boundary by Adam Lyth off Kruis while on 10.

The 23-year-old opener, the subject of a 28-day notice of approach by Yorkshire at the end of last month, went on to make 46 before being bowled by a full length delivery from Tim Bresnan.

He hit eight fours off 37 balls and put on 68 with Moore who then fell in Bresnan's next over when his attempted big hit resulted in a catch behind for Jonathan Bairstow.

At 69 for three, the Royals were starting to struggle against the visitors' attack which included Matthew Hoggard, who is on Worcestershire's wanted list for next season.

He was called up for his first one-day appearance for Yorkshire since their Friends Provident Trophy semi-final defeat against Essex last July and celebrated by encouraging Moeen Ali to play on to his middle stump for 12.

Next to go was Ben Smith, run out following a smart throw by Rich Pyrah, to leave the Royals in trouble at 90 for five.

Pyrah then turned wicket-taker by accounting for Gareth Batty who was followed by Gareth Andrew and Mitchell who was run out after hitting four fours off 59 balls.
