Garrigues ends Begu run
Anabel Medina Garrigues ended Irina-Camelia Begu’s run at WTA Palermo with a topsy-turvy 6-2 1-6 6-0 quarter-final defeat of the Romanian.
The Spaniard, who has won four times in Palermo, beat the WTA Budapest runner-up at the clay-court tournament in Italy.
Medina Garrigues will face eighth seed Petra Cetkovska after the Czech came from behind to beat Italy’s Sara Errani - a 2008 winner at Palermo - 5-7 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
Seventh seed Polona Hercog of Slovenia won her eighth match on the trot by hammering fourth seed Klara Zakopalova, dumping out the Czech 6-1 6-1 in just over three quarters of an hour.
Hercog will face Italy’s Flavia Pennetta after the top seed cruised past Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2 6-2.
