Vinci crashes out of Palermo
Italian second seed Roberta Vinci was bounced out of the WTA event in Palermo by Irina-Camelia Begu, the Romanian winning 6-4 6-3.
Begu, who had not reached a WTA quarter-final before this year, came back from 2-4 down in the first set to claim the next four games and clinch the opener.
The 20-year-old, who reached the final in both Marbella and Budapest earlier this season, then booked her place in the quarters in Sicily with the loss of just three further games.
She will now meet fifth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, a four-times champion in Palermo, after she beat lucky loser Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-1 7-5. The Spaniard now has an enviable 29-3 record at the event.
In Bad Gastein, the quarter-final line-up was completed with Dia Evtimova to play Patricia Mayr-Achleitner and Yvonne Meusburger to meet Maria Jose Martinez.
Bulgarian Evtimova downed Nikola Hofmanova of Austria 3-6 6-4 6-3 to book her place in the last eight while Mayr-Achleitner, also Austrian, beat Croatia's Petra Martic 6-1 6-4.
Meusburger made light work of Sybille Bammer, winning 6-2 6-1 in their all-Austrian clash, and Spaniard Martinez progressed after a 6-4 6-2 win over Czech Sandra Zahlavova.
