Alessandra set for Latics start

Fri 15 Aug, 04:45 PM

Oldham boss John Sheridan could turn to teenager Lewis Alessandra for the trip to Leeds as fellow striker Craig Davies starts a three-gameban.Davies was given his marching orders shortly before half-time in the Carling Cup victory over local rivals Rochdale after he appeared to headbutt Nathan Stanton, and he will now miss the trip to Elland Road.

That leaves the door open for Alessandra, 19, to force his way into Sheridan's starting XI after he came off the bench to inspire the Latics to come from 3-1 down to win 4-3 against Millwall last weekend.

Midfielder Kelvin Lomax is expected to recover from a dead leg in time for the trip after withdrawing from Tuesday's squad at the last minute, but summer signing Kevin Maher is a major doubt.

Maher sustained bruised ribs during the dramatic victory against the Lions and aggravated the injury in training this week.

However, there is good news for Matt Wolfenden who was given the all-clear to step up his recovery from a thigh injury following a positive scan this week.
