Fulham have accused Rangers of penny-pinching in their bid to sign Steven Davis - as reports claim the Ibrox club are close to recruiting Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes.
The Davis saga continues to rumble on, with Rangers so far failing to meet Fulham's valuation of the midfielder, believed to be in the region of £4million.
The Northern Ireland international impressed while on loan in the latter part of last season, with both the player and Rangers keen to make the move permanent.
Manager Walter Smith has money to spend in the wake of Carlos Cuellar's £7.8million departure to Aston Villa this week.
But Fulham boss Roy Hodgson told the Daily Record: "They say Rangers have not had much money until now but I find that hard to understand because they get 50,000 people every other week.
"We are being obliged to contemplate transfers of £6million, £8million, so it seems strange a club of that stature can only afford what they have offered us.
"I would be disappointed if the club allowed him to go for a sum that is below his worth.
"I suppose the risk exists still that because he is not one of the starting four Rangers will come in with a bid that the club finds acceptable, he would desperately want to go and I would be in a difficult situation."
However, any interest in Davis could be about to come to an end, with Smith now apparently concentrating on the capture of Portuguese playmaker Mendes instead.
Reports claim the 29-year-old will arrive in Glasgow today to undergo a medical and complete the formalities on a three-year deal worth £3million.

I take it Jude Surf supports Celtic
I'm sorry. Mr Roy Hodgeson, Have you been living in a cave? Are you from the past?
Rangers were 90 million pounds, Not 90 pounds in debt.
they've only just fixed this problem, and now you expect them to splash out millions of pounds on a player that didn't even make the bench at Fulham.
"I would be disappointed if the club allowed him to go for a sum that is below his worth."
What was he worth to you in January? when you farmed him out on loan without giving it a second thought.
A reserve player. And because he had a decent run you expect Rangers to pay 4 million for him.
I wish Rangers would stop dealing with English clubs. As they do not know how to properly evaluate a player.
and this is why countries like Spain and Italy very, very rarely negotiate with the English.
There evaluations are all over the place. The country is just a complete joke to be honest.
marcs the man
wots wrong cheats????

awww didums, another trophyless season for u scummy lot, unless of course uz pay mccurry off again!

jude surf has the virus
haha no he wont!
maybe if he moved to a decent club he would do alright.
scummy rangers suck!
rangers are pathetic cheats!
rangers is a feeder club with a poor european history
At last Walter has shown some sort of ambition in bidding 4 Pedro Mendez he has proved he can do it in the Premier, he will run riot in the SPL.
rangers are scotlands shame
i agree David, laon him out for a season and he plays well, so over price him. He is good and has great potential, but 4m is steep. Mendes will be a good signing.
he's not getting £4m for Davis. If its that big a deal why is he not selling to anyone else?.
You take Cousin on a swap or £3m up front then we'll talk.
i think Fulham are playing a hard game asking £4 million for a player who cannot get a game for them and is not a creative midfield player a good little terrior type player but certainly not worth £4 million
