20:37 - Heptathlon 200m: The final heat is won in 24.83 by France's Ida Djimou, a season's best.

20:31 - Heptathlon 200m: A bit of a delay but this race gets underway, all eyes on Dobrynska A poor start from the Russian but great from Louise Hazell, the British athlete, she powers away, fades at the end but still wins in 24.19 ! Great run from the Brit and Dobrynska fades terribly, last in around 25s Confirmed as 25.02, she'll be 207 points behind Ennis overnight.

20:24 - Heptathlon 200m: Penultimate heat with Natalia Dobrynska. She will have to beat her lifetime best and then some to come close to catching Ennis, who may lead by 300 points at the end of the day. Up in a few minutes.

20:19 - Shot put: This is it! Majewski's last throw and it"s over 21m but not close to 22m, Cantwell claims gold, Majewski takes silver.

20:18 - Shot put: Hoffa cannot improve, he will stay fourth and a big cheer for Ralf Bartels as the German confirms at least bronze. Bartels has last throw, no improvement but he takes bronze .

20:16 - Heptathlon 200m: They get away well this time with Ennis going well and leading easy and driving for the line and it's a big, big run, 23.25s, excellent from Ennis, 1054 points and almost a personal best. Brilliant from Ennis, she will finish the first day leading evn of Dobrynska sets a PB.

20:15 - Shot put: Adam Nelson with his final throw, can he do something with his final throw? No. under 21m, he stays fifth. All down to Majewski now!

20:14 - Heptathlon 200m: Jessica Ennis in the first heat, she can finish the night in the lead with three events to go. Melnychenko asks for a delayed start after some problems with her blocks then, after a delay, goes an false-starts.

20:09 - Women's pole vault qualifying: A strapping-free Yelena Isinbayeva enters the field and clears 4.55 with ease. She is through.

20:07 - Shot Put: Here comes Cantwell with his penultimate throw and it's big! It's massive! It's over 22m and it's the lead!! What a time to get it, his best in round five, 22.03m! He has the highest PB of the field and he has turned it on when it counts!

20:01 - Shot Put: Another poor one from Nelson while Cantwell does not improve and here comes Majewski And it"s another big one! That's even longer! Just under 22m, 21.91! Comfortable lead now.

19:58 - Shot put: Majewski now and he hurls a big one, he finally gets it right and while it's under 22m that should be the lead! Yes, he overtakes Cantwell, 21.68 and the lead.

19:56 - Shot put: Hoffa still out of the medals with another mediocre throw, 21.14 an improvement but still fourth. Nelson with a poor one, under 20m.

19:50 - CORRECTION! Oh dear, Angelo Taylor came fourth in the end, pipped by Aussie Brendan Cole. Oops.

19:48 - The fourth and final heat of the 400m hurdles: Angelo Taylor is a 47s runner, Louis Van Zhyl is the world number one after dipping under 48 this year, David Greene of Britain in there too, a sub 49 runner. Van Zhyl goes off very fast but Taylor rises first with Cole doing well on the outside for Austalia, and Greene comes through well and Greene powers away , superb run from the Brit and he wins with 48.76! He eased off at the end too and that is ominous. Good lad. Taylor and Van Zhyl through too.

19:43 - Shot put:Adam Nelson comes up, the American has 22+ in him and he hurls in excess of that but oh no a red flag! Unfortunate for Nelson, that would have been the lead.

19:42 - 400m hurdles heat 3: Kerron Clement, Danny McFarlane and Felix Sanchez are the big names here Cisneros of Cuba starts well on the inside though, Clement is casual but doing well and he leads hitting the home straight with McFarlane alongside and Gordon, only 20, comes in well to finish alongside McFarlane and Sanchez. 48.59 I think for Clement, a decent time. Gordon could make it through as a fastest loser.

19:38 - Shot put:Hoffa is struggling and doesn't clear 21m, just under this time. This indifferent form from him and Majewski is playing into the hands of the others, not least Cantwell who still leads.

19:33 - Heat two of the 400m hurdles now, Rhys Williams is in this for Great Britain on the outside with US star Bershawn Jackson in lane two. Aussie Tristan Thomas doing well this season too, with Javier Coulson a 48s runner but stranded in lane one, terrible draw for a 6'6" lad. Williams and Thomas start well, Thomas really blasts through the first 100 but Jackson - after a really slow start - begins his sprint very late. Coulson wins it, Jackson second, the Japanese Yoshida is third and a late surge from Williams means he finishes well and possibly gets fourth but, in a slow race with a winning time of 49.27, he is doubtful to get through.

19:28 - Hoffa is fourth in this shot put and his second-round throw is an improvement but the heel touches the barrier and red flag unfortunately.

19:24 - The first heat of the first round of the men's 400m hurdles. Rising US star Johnny Dutch, Greek star Periklis Iakovakis, Jamaican Isa Phillips and Japan's Kenji Narisako are in a strong-ish field. They get underway after a non-start, Iakovakis starts well as does Dutch. Phillips gets into his stride and these three are in control as the ease in at 49s flat, Phillipswins and Iakovakis and Dutch qualify .

19:20 - Majewski comes up for this, he makes a mess of the throw but somehow sends it over 21m, 21.36 but he is not happy. He is in second to Cantwell, who threw 21.54 in his first round.

19:15 - The men's shot put final is about to get underway, the British represented by Carl Myerscough. Olympic champ Tomasz Majewski of Poland threw a PB of 21.95m earlier this season and is the field lead. American reigning champion Rees Hoffa has thrown 21.89 in 2009, team-mate Christian Cantwell 21.82 but a PB off 22.54 is superior to Hoffa's by 11cm.

19:10 - Confirmation of the top three in the heptathlon: 1. Jessica Ennis (England) 12.93, 1.92, 14.14: 3070; 2. Nataliya Dobrynska (Ukraine) 13.85, 1.83, 15.82: 2932; 3. Jennifer Oeser (Germany) 13.62, 1.83, 14.29: 2862

19:03 - Defar kicks and Melkamu goes with her and Masai and Momanyi is still there and it"s Ethiopia kicking on and Masai is out of it and Defar kicks but here comes Melkamu to overtake her AND MASAI COMES FROM NOWHERE SHE"S PAST DEFAR AND MELKAMU RAISES HER ARMS BUT SURELY PIPPED BY MASAI? Amazing from the Kenyan, somehow she found that extra yard in the last 50m after running herself out of it! Ethiopian dominance is broken! Masai wins the women's 10,000 metres with a stunning finish on the outside!

19:02 - A 72s lap with 800 to go, they conserve energy for what should be a grandstand finish. It will be 31min not sub-30 pace as they run within themselves. Masai leads into the bell at 29:46 and Defar hits the front for the first time!

19:00 - Ayalew drops off into fifth now with Masai and Momanyi leading from Defar and Melkamu. These four will fight for the medals, or rather three for silver and bronze because Defar will surely boss the sprint finish.

18:57 - Five break away, two Kenyans - led by Masai and Momanyi fifth - with the Ethiopian trio of Defar, Melkamu and Ayalew in second, thir and fourth. An East African tactical battle. A 70second lap with four to go...

18:53 - It's starting to spread a bit now with a leading bunch of 14 or so women pulling away and lapping Yukari Sahaku of Japan. Still Russia's Konovalova leads but finally a move from someone, Masai hits the front. Melkamu takes note and moves into second with Defar behind her and here they go, 7k in

18:45 - Still very bunched in the women"s 10k, this is playing into the hands of the Ethiopians unless someone moves soon. Konovalova leads from Nakamura.

18:40 - The following 15 have qualified for the semi-finals of the men's 100m, with three more fastest losers to follow: Powell (9.95), Gay (9.98), Rodgers (10.01), Bailey (10.02), Bolt (10.03), Chambers (10.04), Patton (10.04), Thompson (10.08), Frater (10.09), Edgar (10.12), Burns (10.15), Tsukahara (10.15), Edwards (10.15), Ndure (10.16), Mbandjock (10.22)

18:37 - A relatively slow start to this but, five laps in, the Russian trio of Mariya Konovalova, Kseniya Agafonova and leader Liliya Shobukhova try to stretch things a bit, knowing full well they'll never win a sprint with the Ethiopians.

18:30 - The women's 10,000m final is underway. The first track final of the championships and 23 line up here, with Meseret Defar the favourite and defending champion Tirunesh Dibaba out with an injury and hoping to get fit for the 5,000 next week. Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse and another Ethiopian, Meselech Melkamu, the only other sub-30min runners on show. The top Kenyan lining up is Florence Kiplagat, who is in with a shout of a medal with a PB and season best of 30:11.

18:24 - Simeon Williamson qualified for this fifth and final 100m quarter-final with a poor 10.26, coming third in his heat. He is up against the mighty Usain Bolt now, with Daniel Bailey the world number four with a time of 9.91 earlier this season so he should get second. Bolt starts well enough but he slows down hugely, looking around and letting Bailey beat him in 10.02, sharing a joke with his buddy too. Williamson seemed to limp through that, run well out of the top four and that"s his championship over surely.

18:19 - Trackside, Gay said he was "feeling pretty good" and he looked it. Ndure in 10.16 came third, Frater with 10.05.

18:18 - Tyson Gay in this heat with Michael Frater and Jaysuma Saidy Ndure Good start from Gay who eases off over the last 10m to win in 9.98, easy peasy for the American, Frater second and Ndure I think getting third.

18:15 - Confirmation that Britain's Jessica Ennis leads the heptathlon, 3070 points, 128 ahead of Natalia Dobrynska in second.

18:11 - Away clean this time, Powell with a ferocious start pulls around five yards away and just stops running at 70, Bolt-style, to ease through in 9.95s. A much better run than this morning. Patton in second with 10.05. I think Collins comes third.

18:10 - A yellow card is shown after one of the athletes asks for another delay. I think it was a warning to all the runners for time-wasting, Kimura took too long to get on his marks.

18:08 - The third quarter-final heat, remember top three through only. This is by far the strongest field - Asafa Powell, Kim Collins, Samuel Francis, Olusoji Fasuba, Darvis Patton, Ronald Pognon and Marc Burns have all run under 10 seconds. Shinatro Kimura of Japan makes up the eight. It is held up for some reason, not sure if a false start or a starting error. Seems to be the latter, a delay.

18:02 - Finally they're on their way, Rodgers gets well into it but terrible start from Edgar but he powers back into it to take second. Rodgers wins in a superb 10.01, Edgar second in 10.12. Phiri may have missed out on third to Naoki Tsukahara of Japan.

17:59 - Second quarter-final heat in the 100m, Tyrone Edgar is in here with US champion Michael Rodgers and Zambia's Gerald Phiri. False start to open, Phiri I think. Oh dear a second false start and it"s Christophe Lemaitre, the 19-year-old Frenchman, he falls to the track with his head in his hands, the European 200m champion and junior record holder at 100 is out. He's in tears. Someone else is out too, Daniel Gruesso of Colombia is out too. He was in the lane next to Lemaitre and that cannot be fair, poor guy he was obviously led by Lemaitre as he went just after him.

17:56 - It's the shot put in the women's heptathlon, the third event, and British hope Jessica Ennis has had a couple of dodgy throws, 13.01 and 12.55 But her third-round throw is immense! In excess of 14 metres! 14.14m, a lifetime best and she will pull ahead overall. Just what the doctor ordered.

17:52 - Men's 100m quarter finals, and in heat one Britain"s Dwain Chambers - second-fastest in the heats - and Trinidad"s Richard Thompson the favourites. Martial Mbandjock did well in the heats. Excellent start from Chambers, he will take this easily with Thompson in second and that"s a season"s best of 10.04 for Chambers.

17:45 - Final heat and it's a strong one. Yusuf Saad Kamel, Haron Keitany, Deresse Mekonnen, Taoufik Makhloufi and British hope James Brewer, a late addition to the squad. A much quicker race, they go through at the bell at 2:55 or so and Mekonnen is comfortably leading with Brewer escaping the pack and he qualifies easily. 3:37 for Mekonnen to win as he eases off, the top nine will probably go through here with Makhloufi easing off assuming he"s failed but, in ninth, he'll possibly go through! Great run by Brewer. Kamel eased off knowing he was in, coming fifth.

17:38 - Heat three now, and Britain's Andy Baddeley is running here. Augustine Choge is the favourite, Amine Laalou and Tarek Boukenza also running in this. Very slow again, it"s all about the final lap and Choge moves away, he will win this leading a trio with Lopez Lomong and Laalou, in comes Baddeley for fourth . Henok Legesse, it seems, is fifth and Boukenza run out of it! Very slow again, 3:44.

17:30 - Heat two in the 1500, Asbel Kiprop, Bernard Lagat, Juan Carlos Higuero and Rui Silva in this one. Also British hope Tom Lancashire features and has a chance at qualifying with a decent season best of 3:34.29, his PB too. A quicker start than race one as South African Peter van der Westhuizen makes a run early on but he fades. Sill at 3mins at the bell, pretty slow and they really start to move with 300m to go and it's Kiprop who powers home in 3:41 with Lagat second. Higuero comes through in third and I think Rui Silva fourth. Lancashire run out of it I think.

17:20 - First up tonight, the men"s 1500m heats. Heat one, Frenchman Mehdi Baala is in there and Belal Mansour Ali too Only 3:04 at the bell, very slow at this level a tactical race this has been and expect Mansour Ali and Baala to lead it home with a last-lap blowout. Ali is out of it totally though as Baala wins, very slow at 3:42 so the top five and no more will qualify. USA's Leonel Manzana second, Moroccan Abdelaati Iguieder third.

17:15 - Welcome to our evening coverage of the first day of the World Championships in Berlin. This evening we have round two of the men"s 100m heats, round one of the men's 1,500m and the 400m hurdles, the women"s 10,000m final, the heptathlon shot put and 200m and women"s pole vault qualifying.
