Serie A - Nesta volley spares Milan's blushes

A late volley from Alessandro Nesta saw Milan rescue a point at Siena.

FOOTBALL Nesta Milan - 0

Two howlers from Dida and Kakha Kaladze allowed Massimo Maccarone to round the goalkeeper and put the home side ahead on 24 minutes, and the Tuscans looked set to grab the three points as Milan failed to break down their stubborn defence as the second half wore on. But Nesta rifled home a volley in the first-minute of injury time, while Clarence Seedorf almost won it soon after with a fierce free-kick that clattered down and away off the underside off the crossbar.

Milan chose to rest playmakers Andrea Pirlo and Kaka, clearly with an eye on the Champions League clash with Benfica in midweek, though were almost ahead in the opening minute.

Emerson fed a perfectly weighted through ball to Alberto Gilardino just seconds after kick-off, and Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos did well to parry clear from the striker's early shot, while Clarence Seedorf was denied by a superb last-ditch challenge by Leandro Grimi.

Moments later Gilardino was threatening again, and the Greek &lsquokeeper had to be at his best to push his header wide.

The European champions never looked totally at ease in defence though, and only a smart reaction save from Dida kept Daniele Galloppa's near post strike out after the midfielder had cut inside past Cafu.

Milan remained on top with Seedorf calling the shots in midfield, but it was Siena who took the lead thanks to amateurish defending on the part of the Rossoneri. Galloppa switched the play to Christian Bucchi on the right, his volley was spilled by Dida into the path of Kaladze, he missed the ball totally with his attempted clearance, and Maccarone was on hand to shift the ball to the right of Dida and sidefoot home.

Just after the half-hour mark Siena were on the attack again, though this time Paolo De Ceglie curled his right foot shot just over the bar.

Yoann Gourcuff and Seedorf strived to break down the stubborn home defence and haul their side back into the game, though the former saw a low shot stopped comfortably by Eleftheroupoulos, while the latter presented an attempted lob straight into the arms of the Greek &lsquokeeper.

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti's response was to replace Gennaro Gattuso with Pippo Inzaghi at the break, though Siena made their intentions clear on 52 minutes by withdrawing the attacking Bucchi and deploying the more defensive Mario Frick.

The Rossoneri's lack of incisiveness showed no signs of letting up, and the one real moment of danger Siena experienced came from a Massimo Ambrosini volley from a corner that Lukas Jarolim hacked off the line.

Seedorf then saw a header fly over after fine work from Gourcuff on the left, before the Dutchman sent a free-kick just millimetres over the bar from 20 yards after being hacked down by the otherwise faultless Simone Loria.

The baffling addition off five minutes of added time provoked outrage among the Siena faithful, though that anger turned to disappointment seconds later as a Clarence Seedorf free-kick rebounded to Nesta in the area, and the big defender reacted quickly to volley home into the top corner and give his side a share of the spoils.

Mario Sprick saw red late on for bringing down Seedorf in full flight moments later, and the Dutchman almost completed the turnaround in the final minute with a free-kick that struck the woodwork.
