US Open - Federer: I missed chances

Eurosport - Tue, 15 Sep 12:36:00 2009

The numbers tell the story of Roger Federer's stunning loss in the final of the US Open: 62 unforced errors, 50 per cent first serves, 11 double faults.

TENNIS roger federer during the final match of us open-2009 against juan martin del potro - 0

"I tried everything, didn't work," Federer said after his shocking 3-6 7-6 4-6 7-6 6-2 loss on Monday to 20-year-old Juan Martin del Potro. "I missed chances."

After five successive US Open titles and 40 straight victories at Flushing Meadows, few expected the man many consider to be the best tennis player ever to look so mortal.

The Swiss with 15 Grand Slam trophies sprayed the ball long and wide. In the fifth set, when Federer is normally at his steely best, he had three double faults and no aces and went down quietly on a service break in the last game.

Federer, 28, had Del Potro on the ropes early, up one set and serving for the second at 5-4, 30-love. But the Swiss maestro could not close the door on the youngster appearing in his first Grand Slam final.

"I had him under control for the first two sets," said Federer. "I should never have lost so many chances. It was just a pity. If I win the second set, I'm in a great position to come through.

"Unfortunately, I didn't and that was it."

New Yorkers love Federer but the 25,000 crammed into Arthur Ashe Stadium were solidly supporting Del Potro, perhaps believing a changing of the guard was at hand.

Men's tennis could use a fresh face to challenge Federer and Rafael Nadal and the lanky Argentine with the scraggly beard could hold that honour after beating them on consecutive days.

Del Potro yielded only six games while pummelling Nadal in the semi-finals on Sunday before following it up against the world number one in mankind's largest tennis arena.

"It's always an amazing effort coming through and winning in your first final," said Federer, who won this year's French Open and Wimbledon titles.

"I've got to give him all the credit because it's not an easy thing to do, especially coming out against someone like me with so much experience."

While it was obvious Federer was bitterly disappointed, he tipped his hat to the youngster.

"It was tough luck today, but Juan Martin played great," he said. "He hung in there and gave himself chances, and in the end was the better man."

  4. hervé a # 143, agree. The skill does not fade and neither does the desire. What fades is the body's ability to recover quickly enough for matches. Physios start to work overtime to prepare these guys for battle. Most of these guys carry so many hidden battle scars, mental as well as physical. I am in my late 40s and still play. When I was 25 I used to play up to 6 hours a day and some times 2-3 matches a day in tournaments. Still would get up the next day and do it all over again regardless of the strains, pains, injuries. When I reached 35 playing time was cut back to 2-3 hours as it took me 3 times as long to get over the tiredness and injuries. I am now over 45 and the slightest injury takes me a week or more to recover. It is the body that will send the signal to the brain that time is up. This is not a ROCKY Movie......I will be glued to my TV for as long as Roger is wiiling to grace the courts with his presence.........however long that may be. He is an extraordinary human being and athlete and we have all been very fortunate to live during this time to witness in person the fantastic artistry he has displayed before us......He's not done with yet............

  5. Sorry, the year was 2005 and not 2004.
If you look at Roger career, he had bad year in 2005. He lost in SF both in AUS and French Open.
Look was he has done after that year and after 2008. Every one saying that Roger is finished and cannot win any more GS. How wrong the were.. GO Roger and never stop.

  6. If you look at Roger career, he had bad year in 2004. He lost in SF both in AUS and French Open.
And see what he has done after that year. 2008 was his bad year as he was sick. He lost to Novak in AUS. But he has won all his games vs Novak in last 3 years(US). In the past few weeks he beat all top 10 players including Nadal, Murry and Novak. Roger is back, He had a bad day in US Open and refree did not help.
But this is life. I hope he keeps playin until he is 35. Even in that age players like Agasi could get into GS finals. Roger has much better style to play longer career. Go Rodger and get the 20th more GS

  7. No problem stuartlawrence, they got my name wrong even in my documents, here it's harmless :). I understand what you're saying, and believe me i don't want to see him strugling or frustrated or swearing either. It's unbearable for me too. I trust him and i think he would know better than us when it will be time for him to go. He's an intelligent guy and player. So let's give him a break. Let's wait and see how 2010 will go. 28 is not that old anyway and he knows his body better than us. So why don't we stop this retirement discussion, which it might be premature as it was in 2008. Time will tell. Take care.

  8. Ilda I agree with everything you say about federer being a fair player, but you are forgetting hawkeye. Anyway I think you're missing my point. I have to be honest here, I think that ardent fed fans maybe slightly blinkered about the possible pitfalls ahead(and I'm not including you in this con) Herve put it spot on. From his point of view he sees it as not too much to ask fed to carry on, but all I'm saying is what maybe best for the man himself, not from what all tennis fans want to see. Sorry for spelling your name wrong Ilda. It won't happen again sorry

  9. Stuartlawrence, first i want to clarify my name is ILDA (the first letter is capital the second is lowcase so no lida or iida). It can be that the more difficult the matches more frustrated he could get. But to say the truth, Roger is the only guy (or the one amongst very few) that plays according to the rules. He never takes over 20 seconds beween the points, he doesn't exhagerate with the towel, he never asks for a trainer to slow down his opponent when things are not going his way, he never looks at his box before deciding to challange, he never looks at his inexistance coach for help, he never tries to get under somebodies skin, he's the fairest player on tour. He had to wait for Delpo anytime he was serving, when the rule is that the player has to play with the pace of the server. He serves an ace and the guy sais i wasn't ready, when he was indeed. So all these things are frustrating, even when you're winning and get even more frustrating when you're losing. What i'm trying to say is that if the rules would be respected by everyone, there is no reason to get frustrated. The rules are clear, everyone knows them, a lot don't respect them and what is worse the umpires who are there to asure that the rules would be respected don't do their job.

  10. I'm only guessing here and I admit I could be quite wrong but personally I think federer will find it much harder to stay around as long as agassi, connors and sampras did to name but a few. I see him as unique. I have never seen anyone dominate tennis as he has or have such a good all round game. He is no ordinary champion, blessed as he is with the skill and artistry that makes him unique. I just feel that for him it may be harder than it has been for others to carry on and drop from that standard(as he inevitably must) I stress again from my personal point of view of course like all his fans I hope he carrys on, but however good he ids or has been I personally doubt that he can improve his position in tennis or his considerable skills now. Of course I accept the argument carry on for a couple of years even if it's for say just another couple of slams(not much I know by his standards) That's fine as long as he can cope with descending from his great height, I'm still not convinced he can

From LD, on Wed 16 Sep 3:17PM
  11. I have been fan of Roger when he was 19 years old playing tennis in Perth Australia.
I saw a young man with intelligence. What I saw him to do later in his tennis career was to mix this intelligence with power, accuracy and some extra ordinary shot making. Pete Sampras retired age 32 wining the US Open 2002 to get his 14th Grand Slam titles. Before this final he lost in many other GS. Nobody thought that Pete is going to win another GS but he did. At that time Roger did not have his first GS. Nobody on earth could guess that in 6 years time someone else can break Sampras record of 14 GS. How wrong they were!!!
Rodger loves tennis. He is so humble and he always respects his competitors. I have never heard that he say that I lost because I had injury. In 2008 Australian open he was really sick. He was sick for months but when he lost in semi to Djokovic he said that Novak played better.
I like Roger to play until he is 35 years of age. Like Agassi. He can...the way he plays he can. What I like to see from Roger is the shot making... the unbelievable shots that no one can imagine possible even if he loses the match. You all saw last year overhead shot against Djokovic in semi and this year between the legs shot against the same player to setup the match point. Roger did it when he is 28, he did not have a shot like that when he was winning 3 grand slams in a year at age 25-26.
Of course I want him to win, but even he won’t win any title I want to see him playing as long as Roger Federer can make shots like that. Go Roger… we are all behind you… we want to see another 5 set in Wimbledon so you can win it 20-18 in 5th set… Go Roger…

From Max, on Wed 16 Sep 3:17PM
  12. lida you are quite right about the incompetence of the umpire in allowing challenges to line calls fter such a length of time. My concern is that the more tough federer finds certain slam matches that mean so much to him we may see more of the language he used monday which would be a shame. He swore at w 2007 as well when he questioned line calls. I hope I'm wrong but that is my worry as time goes on. And it would be a shame after how well he has been a role model for youngsters.

From LD, on Wed 16 Sep 2:58PM
  13. Hi Con! I think there is a bit of dilemma here as of what he should focused on! asking him another 2 to 4 years of commitment to Tennis as a fan is not too much from my point of view! We know that he is wise and know and feels what he want and what is right for him. We have seen that from his schedule, his choice of shots, he decision regarding coach etc... All this make of him an amazing person, and unfortunately people are more focused on what he said or didn't say here and there (since there is too little to say about his tennis ;)).
But as a fan of both the guy and the player, I will certainly also understand if he wants to commit to family which i doubt as at this age, there is not much he can and should do for his little twins. When they get 4, 5 years old, he will have much more to do for them...
Let's hope he stays there, that his body allows him etc...
I remember the last game Agassi - Benjamin Becker! After battling past Bagdatis, the guy was done! you could see the talent, the ability but the body was like, time to stop dude! It was painful!

    Cheers!

  14. stuartlawrence27, I think Roger is a very proud man with lots of dignity. He won't settle for 2nd or 3rd best for too long. Regardless of how passionate and devoted his fans are (me included), once his passion for the game drops hard line decisions will be made. As I indicated before, Sampras, Agassi and the likes, once they started being beaten by the new breeds they made their choices.

From Con, on Wed 16 Sep 2:56PM
  15. It is sad to see Roger's title winning streak in Wimbleton and US Open both ended at 5. But on the other hand, it could be good for Roger so that he does not need to carry the load on his shoulder that he must keep the titles forever. We all know that one day any of this winning streak must be ended. This could make Roger feeling more relax but also more hungry to get back the title again (just like what he did in Wimbleton to win the 6th title). I believe he will tie or break Sampras record of 7 Wimbleton and win at least one more US Open, and win more GS even up to age 33-35 unless he has lost the motivation. His natural talent and style of play without much injury allow him to stay among the top much longer than other past great players (Sampras, Agassi, Connors ....). All other younger top players have less stable performance (especialy due to injury like Nadal) and so it is not for sure that they will have better chance than Roger to win most majors in coming yrs even though Roger will be older (and slower)
But we all know that it is not realistic to expect Roger to be 'invincible' forever as the way he had dominated the game from Yr 04-07 (his peak period). No matter if he walked away from the game now or he played until 34-35 when he is no longer among the top, he is and still will be the Greatest Player of all time.
He is the only true #1 player in history that people really expect him to win everything and should never fall....Because he had set the standard too high before during his peak. Even when Sampras was at his peak, people never expected him to be 'invincible' and he could be beaten by any good players on any day or exit early in a major tournament. But to Roger, people always expect him to win everytime without any margin for defeat....
That's why as Roger's fan, I hope he could be more relax from now on and keep adding more titles under his belt, but without much pressure to have to prove himse

    From destong09, on Wed 16 Sep 2:53PM
  16. I'd go along with Siskra that Delpo is not necessarily a bad match up for Nadal, though I think that in general Rafa would probably be more comfortable facing him on a slightly slower court. Time will tell. What is true is that Del Potro has proven both his enormous quality and his mental strength, the latter being something that I seem to remember Siskra questioning subsequent to Delpo's loss to Federer in Roland Garros. To come from the trashing he shipped against Fed in Melbourne to beating him in the US Open final is proof enough for me of Delpo's mental fortitude. Presuming he is fortunate with injuries, I don't think Delpo is gonna be anywhere but near the top of world tennis for the foreseeable future. I'm completely convinced that neither Fed nor Rafa are finished and I suspect that Murray isn't either so the next few months leading up to Australia promise to be very interesting.

  17. No AJ HE DIDN't he only said i "don't give a s.h.i.t." and this only after he told Roger to be quiet.I saw it on TV and to make sure that i was right i just saw it one more time on youtube, so get your facts right, and don't put unsaid words in someone's mouth. And i don't think anyone here disagrees with me that the choise of that umpire is the poorest ever.

From Ilda S, on Wed 16 Sep 2:02PM
  18. One more thing AJ, $10500 is a heavy fine for Serena you think? It,s ridiculous. That's like change money for her. Did you listen to the commentators, John Mc, Mary Carillo etc? They were saying that for what she did she should have been suspended, and she shouldn't be allowed to play the double's final. For respect of tennis, the fans, the players she should have been banned. And that wasn't even her first foot fault in that match either, it was the second one and called by a different line's man.

From Ilda S, on Wed 16 Sep 1:56PM
  19. IIDA Roger used the f word to at the umpire thats worse and should of had a warning.Yes i agree that Del Potro was taking to long to challange the point like Roger said.I love Roger but did not like the swearing enough said

From AJ, on Wed 16 Sep 1:51PM
  20. #136 AJ, how can you compare Serena's behavior with Roger's. Serena used the F word in every 2-3 words. According to you saying "i feel like shoving this F... ball in your F... throat" is the same as saying " i don't give a s.h.i.t." to the umpire? And these were said for two different reasons. Serena got mad becuase the lines woman DID her job, if you step on the line while serving is a fault, whereas Roger was asking the incompetent to do his job. He got mad after the incompetent told Roger to be quiet. Can you believe this. He was allowing Del Po to challange after 10-15 seconds, after Del Po would look up at his box and asking them if he should challange or not, which is not allowed. Haven't you seen other umpires denying the challange to a player because it was too late? I have. So don't comapre the uncomparable.
