Murray reached the US Open final in 2008 but was defeated in the fourth round by Marin Cilic this year, meaning he has been overtaken by Rafael Nadal who reached the semi-finals in New York.

US Open winner Juan Martin Del Potro has overtaken Andy Roddick to claim fifth place in the rankings while Roger Federer remains in top spot despite losing at Flushing Meadows for the first time in six years.

The only other change in the top 10 sees Fernando Verdasco swap places with Gilles Simon, with the Spaniard now ninth and Simon 10th.

The biggest climber in the top 50 is John Isner who moved up 16 places to 39th after having beating Roddick on his way to the fourth round.

Mardy Fish, who reached the US quarter-final in 2008, paid the price for missing this year's event with a rib injury. The American dropped 27 places down to 53 in the rankings.

  1. MORON MURRAY is not a top ten player, he has had a string of lucky matches over the past year but will gradually fall out of the top ten and eventually give the game up, he is a big head and an uneducated PoepHol!!!

  2. murray doesnt deserve to be in d top 5....actually he has passed his sell by date. as is usual wit overrated british sportsmen...give us a break...will ya?

  3. LOL, BEFORE THE USO "THE TRUE NUMBER ONE" SAID THE FIGHT FOR #1 WOULD GO DOWN TO THE WIRE IN LONDON!
NOW HE IS WONDERING IF HE WILL HOLD ON TO HIS 3rd SPOT!

  4. murray is such a joke!!! deserves to be number 30 at best!!! he's so rubbish and wil NEVER win a slam!!! funny that del potro did it...nobody was talking about him!!!

  6. its great to see a player like murray on the tour, if everyone played the same it would be boring, look at the womens tour. he needs a slam though.

  7. ahhhh. all that needs to happen is Djokovic and Del Potro overtaking him in the rankings.

    =D

  9. Ah joy! What a pleasure it is to come here and read all the bitter, simple little haters out to play with their vile sharp tongues and lack of education. You know nothing about tennis but fell your "opinions" amount to something.
Murray has won everything but a Major. He's acheived more than most players on the tour will EVER do and ever have done and beaten some brilliant players CONSISTENTLY along the way. Ask yourselves this: If Murray is SO poor then how is he one of a handfulll of players with a winning record against the legend Federer? 6-3 is NO fluke. Is Federer now a rubish player?
    vitor_bg_cruz: You ARE a @#$%!

  10. To be honest, I don't think he should be ranked above Djoko and Del Potro.

  12. keep dreaming...murray is not even as good as djoko or del potro...those guys have a slam...they have enough attacking play to win a slam...fang boy does not

From milton, on Tue 15 Sep 3:34PM
  13. Murray is the only one in the top six who hasn't won a slam. He'll lose his Madrid points and he'll be under a lot of pressure to maintain his ranking, which he probable won't be able to do. So back down to number four or worse for the end of the year. What has Mr.Reed have to say about that? Or did he shoot himself last night? And the way he is playing, just chasing balls, he'll never get past the quarters in the Aussie or any other slam. And considering there is no love lost between him and Del Potro, this must have really hurt him and destroyed his self-confidence.

From Jimmy, on Tue 15 Sep 3:30PM
  14. Good one Del Potro- You did well and deserved it.Murray will have his turn at winning a Slam and being the No.1 within 2 years maximum.I'm so confident of this because if he doesn't I will eat my own megaphone and poop it out whole.!

  15. THE "TRUE NUMBER ONE" IS THE ONLY FROM THE TOP 6 THAT IS YET TO WIN A MAJOR! I GUESS IT CONFIRMS THAT MURRAY DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE IN THE TOP 3!

From Vítor, on Tue 15 Sep 3:15PM
  16. & dont forget he will lose 1000 points on october because of his last year's title at madrid that he can't defend this year

From pooyan g, on Tue 15 Sep 2:58PM
  17. Murray won't stay at number 3 for long. Soon Djocovic and Del Potro will pass him

From Sam J, on Tue 15 Sep 2:48PM
  18. this is funny that Del Potro could only be fifth meanwhile Clijster is 19th.If it was Murray,he would have been 1st.I don't know while Potro can't be even 4th or 3rd considering that he won and did not even play thhe finals last year.

From BRITISH GUY, on Tue 15 Sep 2:09PM
  19. i am a murray fan but he needs to do better in the top matches and tournaments.
