Serena Williams finally apologised for her angry outburst aimed at a lineswoman during her US Open semi-final against Kim Clijsters.
Williams issued a statement on Sunday conceding she had "handled the situation poorly" but did not apologise to anyone involved in the incident.
The 27-year-old world number two, however, changed her tune the following day in a news conference after she teamed up with her sister Venus to win the Open doubles crown.
"I really wanted to apologise sincerely, because I'm a very prideful person and I'm a very intense person and a very emotional person," she said. "I think it all showed."
Williams said she wanted to apologise "first to the lineswoman, to the USTA (U.S. Tennis Association), and my fans most of all, and to Kim Clijsters".
With Clijsters closing in on the victory on Saturday night, Williams was called for a foot-fault on a second serve to give the Belgian a match point.
Williams launched into an expletive-laced rant at the lineswoman, saying in part, "I swear to God I'm ... going to take this ball and shove it down your ... throat."
Having already received an earlier warning for smashing a racket, Williams was handed an automatic point penalty for a second violation which gave Clijsters the match.
When asked by the media in the post-match news conference if she believed she should apologise, Williams replied: "An apology? From me? Well, how many people yell at linespeople?"
But after two days of negative headlines and with the threat of a ban from the tour hanging over her, Williams's stance softened once tennis officials fined her $10,500 and launched an investigation into the incident.
"I definitely think an apology was warranted," she said. "I just felt like the other one (Sunday's statement) was an apology, as well. This one I wanted to make sure that I also congratulated Kim."
Williams does not believe she committed the foot fault. "I don't think my foot touched the line in that call," she said. "Looking back on it, I think the lady did the best that she could. She was just doing her job."
The Williams sisters won their second Open doubles crown with a dominating 6-2 6-2 victory over top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber.
When Serena was asked what she would like to say to the lineswoman, she responded: "I would like to give her a big ole hug and say, 'Let's just put it all behind us like I have and just move on from it'."

You are all a bit sad to make this into a big argument, there is a difference between discussions and being relly rude, at the end of the day she did what she did and she should take full responsibility for her actions, yes everyone loses their tempers but you don't threaten to shove an object down someones throat because they say something you don't like. She was stupid to say that on LIVE TV, although the fine was a bit much!!
unlike you who's so clearly a serena hater i am glad for "nice girl" clijsters and i dont distinguish between the players whether they are white, black or otherwise.
it is still a fact though had the line judge not inserted herself so strangely in that critical moment and serena self-destructed, given serena's consistent history of coming back from matchpoint to win agst top players who include sharapova. dementieva and clijsters herself (who has a reputation of being a choker in key moments agst top players like serena & justine) whether clijsters would have ACTUALLY won the match on her own. and so the fans will never know and clijsters deep down will know this. what a shame cos people pay to see the top stars not a line judges who inserted themselves in critical moments to disrupt an otherwise sensational match.
given also serena's almost impeccable behaviour ON COURT of hardly ever challenging calls or umpire decisions, it highlights even more the bizarre moment chosen by the line judge to disrupt the match. and given that serena has had a history of bad calls being made agst her somewhat seemingly deliberate such as her match agst chanda rubin also at the us open, the umpire decisions were so deliberately bad that the umpire mariana alves was totally yanked out of the tournament thereafter. was it a case of deja vu for serena? probably
con i'll grant you this, there's nothing much you can do with a warped mind (per daniel) who(you) takes things out of context, twists them around, blend them in with some seemingly plausible logic and hey presto attempts to pass it off as the whole truth! Nice try but the posters here aren't born yesterday as you would think so. have it your way if you think serena was really threatening to kill; my , my even my toes are laughing!
justlovetennis, yeah, Clijsters is really sore and her fans haven't slept a wink since the end of the Semi final, still wondering........................
justlovetennis, so now that you have seen how ridiculous your comment was you wonna drop the argument, sure I'll grant you that. We certainly do have a chronic case of Grand Delusions here. Screen lines persons for security risks. Serena threatened to kill a linesperson and shove a ball down their throat and you are telling us it is the Lines person who is the security risk..................
if i were clijsters i would be really sore at the line judge cos no thanks to her the fans will never know who had actually won that match
just drop it will you con. and stop taking things out of context. you dont need to be a rocket scientist to know in every field there are well trained people and there are black sheep. in every field do you get it? and where does obama get into this? weird is as weird gets.
the issue is not about removing relevant parties on a tennis court, its about screening them security risks included. why are you so reluctant to watch the match again and determine if from a tv perspective she was apparently only there in that last game? no one's drawing any conclusions except you. and your analogies involving sponsors and others are just plain ridiculous. for anyone to consider screening sponsors for security risks is plain looney, to come forth and say it is no less.
get your point kenneth c but we have a chronic case here
let every body put this aside and move on. i am a very big fan of serena and ilove the way she plays her tennis and i dont want anything to happen to her. please let us all put this aside'

objectiveguy62, the loss still hurts huh.........where do you think the USTA, ITF, WTA & ATP get the umpires and line people from? They are trained, paid professionals, just like the players, except they behave like professionals unlike some players. But I guess you guys know what's best. CONSPIRACY, that is the most laughable excuse for a loss yet, and it had to come by Serena fans......predictable. Why aren't you crying CONSPIRACY that Obama won the election.........Since you live in AMERICA??????
hey guys btw i think daniel's right. he's not talking about removing the line judges, just screening them so little overreaction from Con there. dan's also got a point that should there be a question about whether serna would hit the line judge, clearly no by her speech preface.
dan's one of the more succinct contributors here and his points are pretty well supported and makes common sense. there's nothin wrong with asking for fair treatment of both, if serena's investigated so should the line judge! after all this is america!!!!
Its All in the mind Con, its all in the mind, and as Simon Cowell would say: Sorry (again)
daniel2688, was that supposed to hurt my feelings or anger me?????? Sorry to dissapoint you!
Hi Con
Sorry to have caused you so much time & energy in reading my comments and responding. As for me, the only time I will give to a warped mind is just these 2 lines you have just read.
Chinedu N, try abusing and threatening someone in your workplace today in the same way Serena threatened the Lines person. I guarantee you'll be sacked on the spot, escorted from the building and charged with Criminal Offences. Please prove me wrong....pick the nearest male let alone female and tell them you are youing to shove a whole box of pens down their throat.. Take your ruler or your envelope opener and wave it at anyone shouting "I'm going to Kill you" and see how long it takes to have you arrested.
Bblee, #138 - any respect I had for you is completely gone after your agreeance with daniel's hysterics.
IN CLOSING THIS DISCUSSION, YOUR OTHER COMMENT "Serena made her non-physical violence intentions crystar clear from the outset by prefacing " If I could. You've admitted that her intentions were Violent, you just described it perfectly so give it up. By saying "If I Could" it also clearly indicates that her intentions were violent and IF ionly the Rules PERMITTED HER TO DO IT HEY???? You just tried and HUNG your own client. Don't give up your day job cause as a Lawyer, YOU SUCK AT IT!
daniel2688, Serena has apologised several times and wants to move on, the linesperson has moved on to the next tournament, the USTA has proclaimed another record breaking event and moved on to bank their earnings, the Serena "RACIST HATERS" as you devoted fans call them have definitely moved on HAPPILY.
It seems the only person still losing sleep over Serena's loss is YOU. Get some help as it appears you are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress AND A VERY BAD CASE OF "SOUR GRAPES".
Regarding Your comment "we should now focus on the line judge/s. They have to be vetted and screened as much as is possible to weed out the crazies and wackos, the ones with wicked agendas, et..al. Even more so after what happened to Seles, the line judges are in such close proximity to the players that any demented or radical ones could pose a real serious danger to the top players. Have the tennis federations ever thought about this? Especially as it seems up until now, line judges seemed to have almos t complete trust"..........
it took me 23 minutes to finally stop laughing.
SO LINES PERSONS ARE NOW ARE THREAT TO PLAYERS.......NICE SWITCHEROO THERE PAL....WHY DON'T WE DO AWAY WITH THE BALL BOYS AND GIRLS FOR THEY GET CLOSER TO PLAYERS THAN ANYONE ELSE. WHAT ABOUT OPPOSITION COACHES COMING ONTO THE COURT, THEY HAVE AS MUCH MOTIVE TO SLIP POISON INTO THE OPPOSING PLAYER'S DRINK. BAN PHOTOGRAPHERS, SOME OF THOSE CAMERAS MAY INFACT BE MINI GRENADE LAUNCHERS. AND INTERVIEWERS, THEIR MICROPHONES MAY INFACT BE CONCEELED GUNS. I WOULDN'T TRUST THOSE SPONSORS COMMING ONTO THE COURT TO PRESENT THOSE TROPHIES AND PRIZES EITHER, GOD KNOWS WHAT HIDDEN SINISTER MOTIVES THEY MAY CARRY.
number 134, is like u are a litel bit crazy, just 4 that, u wish her one or two years ban. something is total wrong with u.
