Premier League - Ferguson advises patience for Owen

Eurosport - Tue, 15 Sep 23:13:00 2009

Alex Ferguson has urged Michael Owen to be patient in his quest for a starting spot at Manchester United.

FOOTBALL Michael Owen Manchester United 2009 - 0

Owen has started just one Premier League game and scored one goal since his shock summer move to Old Trafford, and it seems unlikely he will play in Istanbul on Tuesday night as United open their bid to reach a third successive Champions League final when they take on Besiktas.

"Michael hasn't been involved, and I've explained that to him," said Ferguson. "The season hasn't really started - and because of the internationals we haven't been playing Saturday and Wednesday, as we normally would, so Michael doesn't really come into the equation because we're still trying to get the blend between Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov."

With Cristiano Ronaldo sold to Real Madrid for a world record £80 million, there were some doubts about Rooney's ability to fill the gap.

Such questions are no longer being asked, the England star on target once again at the weekend as United brushed aside Tottenham.

"Wayne has started well with his scoring," said Ferguson. "We need a couple of players to get us more than 20 goals this season. Wayne always wants to score goals. He just needs consistency.

"He scores in bunches of sixes and sevens, then goes quiet for a few weeks. We just need that consistency of goals, like we used to get from Ruud van Nistelrooy and Andy Cole."

The win at Spurs appeared to be a signal United would prosper without Ronaldo. Yet some continue to claim otherwise, a stance Ferguson finds difficult to understand.

"Some guy at the weekend said this was the worst United team in years," he said.

"That was a beauty. Maybe it is. Maybe we'll only win the league."

  5. Bike 69, mabaho ka !, are you a @#$% or just stupid, how have United wasted a load of money, they signed for him free, and he gets paid practically nothing compared to others, unless he scores wich then pushes his money right up, but unless he scores he gets just a few grand, probably no more than Macheda. also he's not injury prone, every player goes through that as they get older, and also Newcastle always rushed him back from injury, where as at United he will have as much time as required for his injuries to heal properly.

  9. It's stating the bleeding obvious that Ferguson plays a squad not a team. I suspect that is why he is the most successful football manager in history. A few players do not seem to be comfortable with that, and it is no surprise that they do not stay. I do not place Owen in quite the same category. He must be impatient to demonstrate his capabilities which is difficult if you are not on the field, but as Cindy rightly mentions, the boy is a natural and has demonstrated his capabilities time and time again.

Although I am not expecting Utd to win any major trophies this year, I have certainly not written them off! Nothing would give me greater pleasure than roaring with laughter at the expense of all the jerks who have (written them off) should they win something. That would be so sweet: "The worst Utd Team wins the Premiership" or something like that. What would that then make all the other teams?
    ::
As I said, it is unlikely this season in my opinion, but I am sure they will be thereabouts. After all. Ferguson won the European Cup with Aberdeen ffs! And just WHO are Aberdeen? The man just has so much quality, and if Owen has any sense, he will listen to and follow Fergie's guidance very carefully. It is probably the biggest break he has had in his career coming under Fergie's stewardship. Utd's demolition of Spurs may be very telling. I had not expected such a good result, and it was not just a poor performance from Spurs which led to the result either....

  12. I for one feel for Owen, on his day he is an unbelieveable talent and if he gets any kind of run in a team always bags goals. But the massive problem is his constant injury problems, I think this was a brave transfer for Alex Ferguson as its a massive gamble, after all he had played very little for Newcastle. If the medical team at Man Utd can get him and more importantly keep him fit he will turn out to be a great signing sadly (as with our own Dean Ashton) I dont think this will happen

So tell me Tevez, how long have you had that ID name? I'm sure you didnt create it when Carlos was still playing for us. In fact, you probably called him a useless mutley look a like or something like that. But dont worry, we're the fickle ones.

Probably best you look up the meaning of words before banding them about in future.

  15. I think Owen does have to be patient. There are loads of games to play including cups etc and we will need at least 3 senior strikers available. It is important for Rooney and Berbatov i.e. £60million worth to gel together without Ronaldo. With two wide men in Nani and Valencia getting the crosses in I'm sure getting goals shouldn't be a problem. I thought Berbatov played very well against Wigan and Spurs and will come good this year.
