Premier League - Lucas: I am not Xabi Alonso

Liverpool's Brazilian midfielder Lucas says he could never try to replace Xabi Alonso.

"I knew when Xabi left (for Real Madrid) that people would compare (us) but anyone who knows football knows I am not the same player as Xabi," he said at Anfield.

Lucas has always shown promise but is only just starting to produce the form and consistency that persuaded manager Rafa Benitez to sign him from Gremio in 2007.

His performances this term have received special attention because he is filling the gap created by Alonso's move to Madrid during the transfer window.

"I try to play more forward and Xabi is a good passer," Lucas added ahead of Liverpool's Champions League opener against Hungarian champions Debrecen.

"Of course, we miss him (Xabi) but now he is at Real Madrid and we hope he will do well there. We have to now think about our squad," he 22-year-old added.

    It cracks me up when read comments from­ people like you. Clearly know nothing about football.­
    First of all, anyone who watched him play a full 90­ minutes would see that he can do a lot more than just­ "pass". Second of all, if your simple-minded­ brain could only take notice of the small things, like­ his passing, how could you not see how important his­ passing is? He is THE best passer in the world and­ that's what he is primarily used for and that's­ what he was primarily bought for.

    What you said is­ like saying, "I don't rate Drogba, as he can­ only shoot".

    Get some sense if you're going­ to publish comments on this.

    i never rated alonso, as he can only pass. looks good­ when mascherano an gerrard do all his `other` work, but­ lucas is not even as good as carsley or even darren­ fletcher. he should get back to site he used to labour­ for an do his proper job

  11. Once upon a time there was a young man called Ronnie­ Rosenthal, who missed the biggest sitter we have all­ seen. You'll be all right Lucas. Just don't do­ something like that....... And I agree with the others,­ there have been many worse. Fight like the Wee Sammy­ Man and you'll do well. Dirk Kuyt is a good example­ for you. He gave all, even when form went down with­ family troubles, the Kopites recognized the effort and­ commitment and now look where he is. Other Dutch­ forwards could take a leaf.
    And to the naysayers,­ remember, we lost to Spurs cos our 2 central defenders­ distracted themselves by accidentally headbutting each­ other. These things happen over a season. Watch and­ wait.

  16. no offence but i feel lucas won't play much into­ the team when aquillani is fit he will only be a fringe­ player coming in when the starters are either injured­ or suspended, you can give him time but personally we­ have better midfielders who are playing better than him­ and make things work at the moment. who you gonna drop­ on recent form? to make way for a midfielder who needs­ time? or would you rather have a player who already has­ experience and is scoring when we need it when torres­ or gerrard aren't playing at their best. can you­ bring lucas off the bench and he will score or play the­ killer ball? no. he is more a player who is suited to­ start in the carling cup or when we are 3-0 up just to­ give our big guns a rest. he may need time as everyone­ keeps saying but if that is the case loan him out for a­ seasson to a lesser side so he can get experience not­ just bring him on willy nilly when it suits us or we­ have another smicer, biscan, le tallec and bruno­ cherouy on our hand all talk no play.

People often forget that he's only 22...a year­ younger than what Alonso was when we signed him.Give­ him time and he will turn out to be a good (I don't­ think he'll ever be great admittedly) player for­ us. I will say however that as Rafa is giving Lucas a­ fair run that he does the same with Babel who has­ unquestionable ability, but please Rafa play him up­ front as he simply is not a winger.
