Wembley on ice

Fans will get a chance to tread the hallowed Wembley turf this Christmas when it is opened up to the public - as an ice rink.

The biggest rink in England will be built in time for the school holidays and open until the start of term but on one condition - that the temporary surface does not touch the grass.

Six metres of ice will be laid between the front-row seats and the perimeter of the pitch.

"We have got to build the biggest rink in the UK in just six days, which is no mean feat," Nigel Mousley, head of production at organiser ICExperience, told the Daily Mail. "We will have teams working day and night to get it done.

"But we hope skating round the rink and looking up at the arch and the thousands of seats is going to be very impressive.

"There's nothing like it in Britain."

Generators pumping out 1,200 amps will keep the ice frozen as lights, music and big screens entertain skaters.

Wembley is joining other London landmarks like the Natural History Museum and The Tower of London in offering ice skating over the festive period.

Tickets for skating only are £11.50 (£9 for U15s) or £36 for a family; all-inclusive tickets with a football tour and other activities cost just under triple that amount.

It will be open to the public from December 6 until January 3.
