George Burley will continue as Scotland manager, the SFA said after holding crisis-talks with the Tartan Army boss.
"We have today given our full backing to George as Scotland National Coach," SFA chief executive Gordon Smith said.
The 53-year-old Burley's position had been in doubt since Scotland's 1-0 loss to Netherlands, which meant they could not qualify for next year's World Cup in South Africa.
"We met with George yesterday and it was clear that he was as disappointed as everyone that we have not made it to South Africa," Smith said.
"You will not meet a more passionate, committed Scot than George. He is a man who cares deeply for his country and wants to take us back to the stage where we regularly qualify for major championships."
Scotland, who last reached the World Cup finals in 1998 and European Championship in 1996, appointed former Ipswich Town and Derby County manager Burley in January 2008.
"If the World Cup campaign has shown us anything it is that we are at our best when we work together. It is by standing united behind the manager and the team that we can achieve the success that we all crave," Smith added.

Comment 78 - 97 of 97
BURLEY IS A GOOD MANAGER ITS JUST THAT YOUR PLAYERS ARE S.HIT....AND I DONT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH BEING PROUD OF A KING WHO ONLY TOOK WHAT WAS RIGHTFULLY HIS...SCOTLAND.AND I BET YOUR A CELTIC FAN? AND BY THE WAY I WAS BORN IN DRUMCHAPEL.
If Burley was passionate about Scotland and wanted the team to do well, he'd have resigned!
deesydave - your a clever c.unt aren't you? Take your sassenach views and pi.ss off to the turd you came from!
COMMENT 98 NOW NOW..WE DONT WANT ANY SOUR GRAPES BECAUSE YOUR LITTLE COUNTRY DIDNT QUALIFY FOR THE WORLD CUP AND THE FACT WE WENT THROUGH OUR GROUP UNBEATEN.SCOTLAND SHOULD MAKE MOANING THERE NATIONAL SPORT ...CUS THEY WOULD BE WORLD CHAMPS NO DOUBT AT ALL....LONGSHANKS 4EVER HA HA SCOTTISH K,NOB.
Tell me Im wrong.
The only good thing about being in England though when they qualify for the World Cup is the average punter's steadfast and rock solid belief that England need only turn up at the competition to claim the title. Oh, and they won it in 1966. Cue the starting titles of the World Cup coverage from the BBC and the first projection will be..................................................... ........ Bobby Moore holding aloft the Jules Rimet trophy. How predictable.
As a Scotsman I have absolutely no expectations of my National team. Im tired of "almost" getting there. Iceland almost always gets close. Apologies Iceland. It seems to Scotland fans that getting to the finals , any finals is a job done. Winning the thing doesnt seem tom enter the vocabulary. One thing I am glad of though. We the Scots didnt win it in 1966. Fancy listenning to that rubbish for the next forty years!
Nothing , but nothing involving the Scottish Football team will ever come close to the excruciatingly embarrassing debacle that was 1978 and Argentina. As a 13 year-old I cheered the team as the fans from Hampden waved our world beaters off on their adventures down in South America. No other Scottish team(in my eyes) will ever embarrass me as much as that team did. So the present position that the SFA have in filling the post of Manager should be a fairly easy one. It actually doesnt matter.
Sticks and stones will break my bones but calling me GOOD LOOKING wont harm, and yes this is me on the right with m
Comment 86. Refresh my memory and tell me the last englishman to manage a team to the title in england. Think you will find it was a long time ago (leeds 1992). English managers are @#$%
i mean right i cant tell the diffrence
only one thing to say about you I TAKE IT YOUR THE GOOD LOOKING ONE ON THE LEFT ....
bye bye leitchy41
you should have took your brain to school with you, you might be able to spell today if you had.
Are you guys still blogging about the SUPERMARKET LEAGUE!!! SHOTTLAND has nee any idee how te play fusbal, there a bunch of Sunday afternoon choppers in the park!
i cant beleive this decision as a loyal fan who has only missed 1 game in the last 10 years and that was for my wedding.all i will say on this and say it loud is AS LONG AS GEORGE BURLEY IS SCOTLAND MANAGER I WILL NOT GO TO ANOTHER SCOTLAND GAME AS THIS MAN IS A CLOWN. time for all scotland fans to do is go to the next scotland home game instead of supporting them stand outside hampden and scream our protest while scotland plays to an empty stadium.time for every scotland fan to make a stand and save scottish football form the likes of smith/peat/burley who are determined to make us the clowns of international football
George Burley is our manager, get behind him, every player and every fan should be behind him, we will qualify for the euros, im sure of it.
Listen!!! Burley has to go. what you really need is an ENGLISHMAN at the helm of your SHOTTISH national team, we English have the brains compared with the BRAUN of the SHOTTISH, poor old SHOTTLAND, you really are a bunch of losers!!!!
well said WILL.
mister b, Celtic playing in europe is still a club game, and lets not get away from the issue here, turkey said you dont see many Scotland flags at Celtic games, he asked that because he is a turkey, what that has to do with three rangers players making a fool of themselves while on Scotland duty or Burley still being manager is beyond me, only a turkey would say that.
it is simple we need to stand united ... who cares where fergie , boyd , and mcgregor are...what wee have shown in the past month is that we have a team that if kept together can achieve great things. I remember watching when we played holland at the euros in 96 ... we were never in the game and ye when we won at hampden the last time then got gubbed in holland we learned a sorry lesson.... the only lesson still to be learned is narrow minded bigots who tarnish the scotland squad and take club issues to the international stage ... its a learning process we have learned so bring on the euros .... from a scotland fan
