The Football Association have hit Emmanuel Adebayor with two charges following his stormy performance in Manchester City's win over Arsenal on Saturday.
Adebayor is facing a three-match ban for violent conduct for the incident involving Robin van Persie, while the City striker is likely to face an additional punishment for the celebration that followed his goal in the 4-2 win.
"The Football Association issued two charges against Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor following Saturday's Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Arsenal," said a statement issued by the FA.
"Under the fast-track disciplinary process, Adebayor has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Robin van Persie, which resulted in the Arsenal player receiving facial injuries.
"Referee Mark Clattenburg has advised the FA that he did not see this incident, but has confirmed that had he done so, he would have sent Adebayor off for violent conduct. The player has until 6pm on Wednesday evening to respond to the charge.
"Adebayor has also been charged with improper conduct following his actions when turning and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal supporters after scoring.
"The Greater Manchester Police have written to The FA with their views on this incident. A separate date will now be arranged for a commission to consider Adebayor's goal celebration."
Unless the Togo international can successfully argue his case, he is almost certain not to be available for City at least until their trip to Wigan on October 18.
Van Persie had little doubt over the intent of Adebayor's challenge, which he labelled "malicious".
Although some ex-professionals, including Gareth Southgate and Roy Keane, have sympathy for the former Gunners forward over his goal celebration, most were appalled by his tackle on the Dutchman.

i think that fa is too wrong for the ban,is only celebrations which every player on earth will do,if he is adebayo shoes,i think he dnt deserve any ponishment, from any football body..
Man City have allowed this to happen, they have raised the expectations of the player before the game and he believed he a god, but now has fallen down to earth - a bit like their previous god Shinawatra.
They now have "Ade's" image on a floor in a shopping centre so people now can walk all over him and dogs can leave deposits. Man City have the cheek to say that the work is to help promote the local arts scene - the artist commisioned by Man City is based in San Francisco - they really are dickheads!!!!
Is the artist a friend of any of Man City's management I wonder????
Typical of City all brass and no class
Man City FCNK

How can the FA charge him over the goal celebration when the referee booked him for it on the day? Are we not always being told that if the referee has dealt with a matter then the FA cannot deal with it again?
Did you know that an anagram of Adebayor is : ADE R A YOB. How true !!!
No Rogerson. The FA dont hate City, they just hate mindless thugs and hooligans !!!
Lets see how City get on without Adebayor for the next six games. They will win nothing and lets see where Adebayor goes next year, !!!
FA now hates CITY WHAT NEXT?
john
Adebayor like anyone else who act like that should be banned for a full season at least,he new what he was doing, bulls..t when i hear these comentators say emotion got the better of him. Bulls..t when he says he loves the club and kisses the badge, He has no more love for Man City than he would for any other club, NONE AT ALL, all he loves, like the majority of them is the money and fame.
If a supporter ran on the pitch and kicked one of the opposing players in the head, what would they say about him? emotion got the better of him, no they would say he is just a thug and should be banned from going to any football matches for life, RIGHTLY SO THATS WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN, however that so called supporter probably has more built up emotion in him than any player will ever have, because generally most of them live their life for the club. Therefore i think Adebayor should be dealt the same punishment that the FA would rightly request be handed out to a supporter the running on the pitch is secondery and minor. BANNED FOR LIFE
Oh and there was a place for "Chopper" Harris and Vinney Jones both of whom are British.
No mention of the RvP celebration when he was allowed to swear at all the City fans and no mention of a fine for Arsenal over the conduct of their fans who threw banana skins at Ade and racially abused him and SWP.
Have Aresnal apologised to our steward that got hurt yet?
Double standards, perhaps if we'd have lost everyone would be on ourside when we started crying.......again!!!
Adebayor is a mindless thug who should be deported back to Togo. No place for such cretins in the English game !!!
hey city fans wots it feel like buying sucsess another chelski hahahahahahaa
