Benitez fears standards may slip

Tue, 15 Sep 22:22:40 2009

Rafael Benitez has expressed concern at the speed in which the Premier League have introduced a quota system for home-grown players.

Benitez has had to contend with quotas in European football for several years, but now he fears for the overall quality of the English game. The new regulations mean there will have to be eight home-grown players in every 25-man league squad from next season.

"Maybe it has been brought in too soon," said Benitez.

"In the Champions League we had two or three years to increase the numbers of home-grown players.

"The problem in England is that there is a big gap between the academies and the first team, the reserve league is not filling this gap.

"It may now be difficult to maintain quality, but we will continue to do our best. The number of players is not the point, the quality is the point. But if they have decided this maybe they have been thinking about this rule for a long time."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger rejected the Premier League's new rules on home-grown players as "artificial".

The Gunners have a strong academy development programme, which takes in the cream of talent from around the globe, bringing though the likes of current captain Cesc Fabregas and full-back Gael Clichy.

Speaking in Belgium ahead of Wednesday night's Champions League Group H opener against Standard Liege, Wenger declared: "I am not in favour of it, and I said that many times.

"I feel that when you want to see the best players in the best league in the world, you have to be open. To accept competition - and we live for competition - it is not to accept artificial rules and that is why I am against it."

Actually it was Tom Hicks not Rafa that said he wanted Liverpool to become a 'smart club' and decrease their debt, Tom Hicks knows nothing about real football, not the odd shape version they play over in the states!!!! but real football which he calls soccer ewwwwwwww, football is football played with a round ball, go back to the states and leave Liverpool alone once and for all and that George Gillette or whatever his name is, I'm a fan and dont really care, the day those two sell up and we have decent owners again woooooooo hoooooooo!!!!!

  5. Half a Brain and co: Read well.Rafa is not rejecting the idea but he is saying that FA would have implement it gradually. That is maybe start with 5Home grown players, next year or so 6, the other year 8 and so on.With such an impact decision some clubs like Porthmouth may collapse

  6. When did Arsenal last produce a half decent English player, Cesc Fabregas and full-back Gael Clichy were both trained by clubs in the home countries and bought on the transfer market. Wenger can recognise and develop a talented player but who was the last thirteen year old to come through the Arsenal ranks and make it in the big time. Ashley Cole?

  13. Rafa was quoted this morning on TV for saying he wants Liverpool to continue being a 'smart' club and the aim is for Liverpool to have the smallest debt among the top clubs, correct me if I am wrong Rafa but SMART clubs win things, you don’t, and to achieve your goal of having the smallest debt would it also not help if your team won trophies? Hence, you cannot call your club smart for spending wisely if they win bugger all, if that is a mission statement then Liverpool should not be classed as a big ambitious club. Not saying money should buy success, but winning trophies generates money and revenue which helps buy players hence develop a business through money generated by the club itself.

  15. Good points 'Half A Brain'. You've definitely shed new light on the topic. However, when I said you only need 15-20 players, I wasn't implying any 15-20 will do. Of course you need a pool of talent, which is why I made the point about the championship e.t.c. I ws suggesting that there is a big enough pool for English talent to prove itself if it exists.

I get your point about the cheaper prices of foreign players though. Although I think comparing human beings to cheap foreign industrial import is a bit tactless. Its not like they're cheap because they are damaged 'goods' ( which it seems you are implying). They're not sub-standard humans coming to pollute English football (As is the case with sub-standard cheap goods from China). Whatever bad behaviour is shown by SOME foreign players, is no worse than what even the most celebrated English players do anyway. I still take (what I think is) your point though.

TD, comment #10, You are missing few points buddy. 1- ''you only need about 15-20 for a national squad''. You need at least 100 good players to find the 20 best. It is not like an on-demand thing to get a good goal keeper or a good forward. 2- ''English player ... are so overpriced''. No They are not. Foreign players from Africa, South America and other 3rd world poor countries are very cheap. That is why the good English players don't get picked up. This is like manufacturing in China because it is just too cheap, and we all know why it is so cheap.. 3- ''English clubs won't need to capture young talented foreigners''. That is incorrect, because foreign players are much much cheaper than local players, unless they are well known and established and then they are as highly priced as any English player.

The bottom line is that this is unfair competition inside the EPL. Local talent has to fight cheap export, and the cheap export is increasingly showing its bad quality. And let's not get carried away. Outside England, no one cares about any EPL team outside Top 6. The EPL is not as ''great'' as we may think and unless it becomes more competitive, people will only follow the Top 6 teams. Do you think Portsmouth is a team that is doing right? Look how many cr'ap foreign players it got, and the list is long

"The problem in England is that there is a big gap between the academies and the first team''. Only in Liverpool Mr Benitass, and the reason for that is..... YOU!

  18. This doesn't make sense to me. Its not like there is a shortage of ENglish players in England, and you only need about 15-20 for a national squad. Look at all the ENglish players in League 1, 2 and the championship.... there is an abundance, if they were good enough, wouldn't premier league clubs be buying them? They dont because when they do get a decent English player, they are so overpriced... i.e Ashley Young, Stewart Downing e.t.c Why should clubs play inflated prices for a player just because they're English?

This is a lazy attempt by the PL. All it will do is inflate the prices of ENglish youngsters even more, reduce the quality of the PL, and consequently maybe the amount of revenue generated by the PL. The reason the National team has been suffering recently is not because there is a scarcity of good players, its more to do with the mentality of the players (as Capello is proving). The PL need to address the problem from a far more fundamental aspect (increase the quality of grassroots training), then there will be such a pool of talent that people wont feel the need to inflate the price of good English players, and English clubs wont need to capture young talented foreigners.

Sorry its long, but it makes sense I think.

From TD, on Wed 16 Sep 3:48AM
  19. This also just means that the local lads will be sought more after in an aggressive manner which in turn will mean higher prices for very young players. Having said that I agree with the principle and I dare say that it should be more specific to english players as home grown doesn't necessarily mean english/welsh, but it should be staged.
