Bruce urges Cana restraint

Tue, 15 Sep 14:14:00 2009

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has admitted he may have to rein in the tenacious instincts of captain Lorik Cana if he is to keep him on the pitch.

The 26-year-old Albania international has made an impressive start to his career on Wearside after completing a £5million summer switch from Marseille, although the yellow card he picked up during Saturday's 4-1 Barclays Premier League victory over Hull was his third in five games.

Bruce said: "That's his third yellow card - it is just getting him through the season that will be an issue. To say he is trying to do his best is an understatement. You can see why I have made him captain."

The Black Cats boss added: "He has obviously got to try to curb it, but he is just full of enthusiasm, trying to do the job and trying to play in England.

"He has got a good way about him. We will obviously have to check the yellow cards if we can, but he will be a cult hero here, I am sure of it."

  5. What we dont want is for an incident like Adebayor and Van Persie happening with Cana an another player. It wont be long before the FA clobber Adebayor with some heavy charges which I think will lead to a considerable ban., and I dont think we as a team can afford to be without him for a long period.

  7. he may have to bring him off quite a few times if it looks likely that he may get booked, he will have to learn not to be so rash, mind you , some of the tackles he's been booked for are not worth a booking. The referees must be more consistent in their decision making, when deciding whethere to book a player or not.
