Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Michael Owen to be patient in his quest for a starting spot at Manchester United.
Owen has started just one Barclays Premier League game and scored one goal since his shock summer move to Old Trafford, and it seems unlikely he will play in Istanbul on Tuesday night as United open their bid to reach a third successive Champions League final when they take on Besiktas.
"Michael hasn't been involved, and I've explained that to him," said Ferguson. "The season hasn't really started - and because of the internationals we haven't been playing Saturday and Wednesday, as we normally would, so Michael doesn't really come into the equation because we're still trying to get the blend between Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov."
With Cristiano Ronaldo sold to Real Madrid for a world record £80million, there were some doubts about Rooney's ability to fill the gap.
Such questions are no longer being asked, the England star on target once again at the weekend as United brushed aside Tottenham.
"Wayne has started well with his scoring," said Ferguson. "We need a couple of players to get us more than 20 goals this season. Wayne always wants to score goals. He just needs consistency.
"He scores in bunches of sixes and sevens, then goes quiet for a few weeks. We just need that consistency of goals, like we used to get from Ruud van Nistelrooy and Andy Cole."
The win at Spurs appeared to be a signal United would prosper without Ronaldo. Yet some continue to claim otherwise, a stance Ferguson finds difficult to understand.
"Some guy at the weekend said this was the worst United team in years," he said.
"That was a beauty. Maybe it is. Maybe we'll only win the league."

Ferguson need to give owen a chance to play,he wont get to play every game or start every game but Ferguson need to give him a shot. even if owen dont start in the BPL let him start in the FA and Carling and Champions league. owen is a great player.
if owen didnt know what a where he went to do it he would be great but as it as is he is not fit yet so i know why ..yes
Fergie mainly signed Owen as a back up to Rooney or Berbatov, but what i think Fergie should and probably will do is start Owen in the FA cup or something like that, as he always rotates the squad in those competitions, so we will probably see Owen starting alongside Macheda sometime soon, but i have no doubt Owen will do well for United and hopefully he'll strike up a good partnership with Rooney, and get back into the England squad.
I beg to differ! To me Owen is still among England's highly gifted strikers. Please do not rule him out. What I think Owen needs is to be given more chances to sharpen up. It doesn't have to be first starter position, always, but let him play even for the mid or last quarter of every match, he will catch up. I respect Sir AF's judgement on players ability, he is the coach anyway. However, when it comes to Owen, I think he is not being fair. Did Sir AF recruit Owen just have him on the reserve bench? That is unthinkable. Or was the move forced as we are made to believe by the grapevine? Please give Owen a chance..... please!
Owen you made a very big mistake to join SAF.He is so logical in his rotation policy.Thats why R7 and Tevez left. However since you were bought for 2Yens, you ought not to complain
Owen cool down for sir Alex,he will soon add you to staring up list very soon
hahaha owen is crrrrrap, just like half the manure team, but dont worry, slur phallicks will soon teach him how to cheat good
WELL SAID SIR ALEX
i 100% support Sir Alex......
Owen should get up on one of Fergies horses as a jockey, because his football carrer is all but over, Capello has been out to watch him on a rake of occasions and every time he has fluffed his lines, wont make the world cup squad and shouldnt with Rooney, Crouch, Agbonlahor and Defoe all playing 10 levels above him.
