Smith has penalty doubts

Tue, 15 Sep 09:22:27 2009

Walter Smith will reserve judgment on a controversial penalty incident and Madjid Bougherra's subsequent red card as Rangers lost their 100% record in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League in today's goalless draw at Motherwell.

But Smith admits the Scottish champions did not do enough to earn maximum points from the clash at Fir Park regardless of the late drama, which saw Allan McGregor save from Jim O'Brien's penalty after Bougherra was sent off for complaining about the decision.

Smith said: "I haven't had the opportunity to see it again, although there seems to be an element of doubt over whether any contact was made. If there was no contact made then we would have a problem."

He added: "When Madjid put his foot in to attempt to tackle, I think the referee would be right to consider he has made contact, although there seems to be an element of doubt over that aspect of it.

"The referee was well positioned but I haven't had an opportunity to see it. If he didn't make any contact with the player then I can understand his frustration, especially at that time in the game.

"Although I wouldn't condone his reaction to it, I certainly could understand it if that was the case.

"I was a bit disappointed by how we played overall. It took us a long time to get started in the game and it wasn't until after our substitutions that we managed to apply the amount of pressure we had hoped for.

"In fairness, I felt Motherwell played well and set their stall out well. We were just a bit off the pace of the game for the majority of the match.

"Although we created one or two opportunities, overall, I don't think we deserved any better than what we got."

  5. defenders need to stay on there feet-refs are acting out instructions from the powers that be-not saying i agree with it but thats how it is.Judgement on the defenders part is always gonna be the important thing-the attacker was on the edge of the box, coming back across-did Madjid need to dive in at that point -no-but he did and we lost a penalty.

  6. If the chances are high that a penalty is given when a defender tackles and plays the ball in the box then the referees are getting it wrong consistently. Should we be pandering to these incompetents by telling defenders not to tackle, or should we be getting rid of the hapless referees?

  7. in my opinion it was-defenders know that if there gonna stick there leg in while its in the box, no matter if they play the ball, the chances of the opposition getting a penalty are gonna be high.
.Old firm fans need to open there eyes and see that we have no divine right to beat every team all the time and when the other teams play well lets say so-our game gets lambasted from all angles, and here we are focusing on how bad rangers were instead of how good the well were.Refreshing to see a team having a go and taking something
