Celtic Heartbeat To Wales Squad

Mon 15 Oct, 11:09 AM

Wales coach Martin Hall has included 11 players from Celtic Crusaders in his initial 29-strong squad for the internationals against Papua New Guinea and Scotland.

There are 11 potential new caps, including Aaron Summers, Ian Webster and Luke Dyer, the Crusaders' recent signings from Hull KR.

The inclusion of captain Lee Briers is dependent on him recovering from an ankle injury he sustained playing for Warrington at St Helens last month.

Hall is confident of the availability of Bradford's experienced stand-off Iestyn Harris, who missed last year's World Cup match against Scotland through injury, but he has failed to persuade St Helens hooker Keiron Cunningham to come out of retirement from the international game.

"Iestyn wants to finish his international career playing in a World Cup," said Hall.

"He committed himself last year, there was never a question about that but he got injured."

Wales face Papua New Guinea on Sunday October 28, at the Crusaders' Brewery Field in Bridgend before travelling to Glasgow for their crucial World Cup qualifying match a week later.

The Welsh need to over-turn a seven-point deficit from the first match to clinch a place in next year's World Cup.

The other new faces are the Crusaders trio of Phil Cushion, Geraint Davies and Grant Epton, Bradford's Dave Halley, Matt James and Craig Kopczak, Warrington's Andy Bracek and Sean Penkywicz, of Halifax.

"This could be our strongest squad in a long time," said Wales executive chairman Mark Rowley.

"We're pleased to have Iestyn back after the disappointment of his injury last year. He's definitely fully fit this time around and has been instrumental in recent training, especially with his Bradford team-mates."
