ATP Tour - Murray ready to build on US Open run

Andy Murray has regained his focus thanks to a five-week break and the Briton is ready to build on the progress made in reaching the US Open final.

"I've never really had that stretch at home in the middle of the year and it could make a big difference," he said after his second round win at the Madrid Masters on Tuesday.

"Although physically I felt okay, shot selection and focus on every point can be better when you are fresh and I've been working hard, doing a lot of fitness and that makes a big difference to how you feel on the court."

The Scot enjoyed a productive hardcourt season after winning the Cincinnati Master title and finishing runner-up to Swiss world number two Roger Federer at Flushing Meadows last month.

But having also fitted in a trip to the Beijing Olympics in August, Murray felt he needed a break to recharge his batteries.

After spending some time at his south-west London home, the world number four said he now feels fitter and fresher.

"I've been playing really, really well in practice in the last few weeks, better than I was playing throughout the summer, I was hitting the ball much, much better," said Murray.

He was leading 6-0 2-1 in Madrid on Tuesday when opponent Simon Bolelli quit the match with a shoulder injury and now faces lofty Croatian Marin Cilic, who beat 13th seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-2 6-3.

"It's quick here, the ball flies a bit and it's tough to keep the returns down in these conditions," said fourth-seeded Murray. "He (Cilic) hits the ball big so if he's playing well, he's going to be a tough guy to beat."
