Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson has expressed his admiration for Alan Smith, but says the club have not moved for the Newcastle United man.
The Trotters are seeking a replacement for the injured Sean Davis and Smith and his Newcastle team-mate Kevin Nolan have been linked with Bolton.
Megson has made a move to offset the loss of Davis by inviting Frenchman Camel Meriem for a trial, but says there is nothing in talk of a bid for Smith.
"I'm an admirer of Alan Smith, he's a terrific player, but there's been nothing because the transfer window is closed," said Megson.
"I don't know where all these things come from, but it's not here."
Commenting on former Bordeaux man Meriem, Megson added: "He's out of contract, so we'll just have a look because we're in a situation with what has happened with Sean where we could do with another body in there if it can be done.
"We're not saying we're going to do anything, but he'll come over, all being well, and spend a few days training with us."

We need some strikers....
Suicidal, selling either of these lads at this stage. Mind you, its just the sort of bloody stupid thing that Newcastle 'management' would do , the sort of thing the fans have come to expect !!!. Why cant we have somebody intelligent in charge of the club instead of f$#$#$** accountants.
I fully expect players to be sold in the January transfer window and to be covered by loan signings. In fact I'm certain it will happen.
If we sell Smith and Nolan then Fat Ashley will make some quick money but we can forget getting back into the Premiership and may even go down into a lower division losing Ashley more money. If we keep them then we have a very good chance of getting into the Premiership again and Fat Ashley would make more money than he could get from selling our two key players this season. Of course the best thing would be to sell Ashley into slavery - but lets hope Ashley gets a buyer for Newcastle soon.
not daft suicidal!!!
we have to build NOT deplete
(any takers for barton though - we'll pay you good money..?
...thought not)
If Smith or Nolan or both go in January, it will just be plain daft.
Who'd have thought the day would come when Newcastle Players were being tapped up in the press by ....BOLTON!
I think if we sell Smith or Nolan in the January transfer window we will be making a big mistake. We have a small squad and loosing either of them would hurt and it would hurt the toon more after the way the pair have been playing for the toon this season. They have stepped up to the plate this season and played key roles in the way we have got to the top, So lets keep them and think of players we can bring in to help them out more.
yous could of had him for £5 last season not prem class. not to bad championship though.keep it going smithy 9out 10.toon fan.
