Paper Round: A load of Baracks

Eurosport - Thu, 15 Oct 08:31:00 2009

Normal service is resumed in the sense that the England juggernaut under Fabio Capello got back on the rails with a 3-0 win over Belarus.

FOOTBALL World Cup qualifying 2010 England Belarus Beckham - 0

It was a much-changed England side and admittedly the opposition were hardly taxing, but it was an impressive display from a number of fringe players.

Peter Crouch stole the show with a brace of goals, but it was not enough to secure the man-of-the-match award which went to David Beckham for his 30-minute cameo. The decision to go for Beckham left Capello aghast.

"I thought it was like Barack Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize after nine months as President," said Capello. Maybe not quite on that level, but the papers picked up on it.

'Becks award stuns Capello', states the Daily Express, 'Load of Barracks', screams The Sun and 'OBarmy', claims the Daily Mirror.

The Star choose to focus on Crouch and his two goals, with the Tottenham man catching the eye only to later admit he may struggle to claim a regular start for his country.

Rio Ferdinand came under the spotlight following his poor showing in Ukraine and The Sun gives him a glowing recommendation. 'Light Fantastic' as opposed to 'Blown Fuse'.

Former Birmingham supremo David Gold could be readying a bid to buy West Ham, as he is quoted as saying in The Sun: "I was a West Ham player as a youth, was born across the road, my mum was a lifelong supporter and myself and David (Sullivan) once owned 30 per cent of the club. So you can draw your own conclusion."

Newcastle may not be in the Premier League, but they still command their fair share of headlines and The Sun claims Mike Ashley has told manager Chris Hughton there will be no money to spend.

The other Magpies are in the news as much as Newcastle at the moment and the Daily Mirror claims Roberto Mancini wants to meet with the club's owners before deciding whether to take up the role of manager of Notts County.

The Mirror loves a transfer tale and they claim Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Brazilian striker Adriano in January.

Robinho is close to full fitness again, but he has been warned that winning his place back in the Manchester City side will not be easy. "He is no different than any other player in that he will be fighting for a place when he returns to fitness," City coach Mark Bowen is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.

The Mail secured an interview with Iain Hume, the player attempting to rebuild his career following the sickening fractured skull he suffered last year and it is pretty harrowing stuff to read the piece in full.

  4. Its envitable that i get the most boos but perhaps i'm just stating the truth and sometimes that hurts. The golden generation never materialised and its never gonna as long as you have players who only seem to get a @#$% when they are playing the likes of Andorra and um lets see Belarus. I'm not voting for anybody on this page because your all English and that don't mean a thing to me. :)

  9. Atleast it makes a change from Wayne Rooneys ugly mug being splatered everywhere even though he cant do it for england against decent opposition , everyone is so far up his spotty back side it is unreal , England were far from convincing last night and looked ordinary atbest , to sit back and bask after a qualifying campaign against very poor opposition is surely just setting it up for a huge dissapointment and even embaressment at the main event , England are a mediocre team ... AT BEST

  10. To all Beckham fans, stop being so bias and see what the rest of the world sees. Beckham is a good player, no doubt, but he is first of all a mega star thanks to his PR team. And everyone laughed at Bruce giving him man of the match award that means nothing anyway. By giving this award to his ex mate he confirmed what every already knew, the man of the match award means nothing, it's just an opinion, nice if you get it but that's it.

Once again beckham is applauded as the saviour of England. Absolute tosh. beckham shouldnt even have been in the squad. All he is bothered about is raising his personal profile so he can con more money out of silly punters who buy his endorsed products. As for voting him man of the match, the old trafford connection of his old mate bruce, smells of favours for friends if you ask me. beckham should not be on the plane to South Africa, he hasnt earned his place. Peter Crouch should be a definite, his goal scoring for England proves his case. shrek (rooney) is always either injured or gets sent off so is a liability and heskey cant even get a game for his club and when he does he cant stay on his feet. As for ferdinand, he needs to hang up his boots, hes too slow and blames everbody else for his mistakes!

  14. Creativities Beckham has are of a unique one which no other player in the England shirt has similar skills and qualities. He was effective as soon as he came on the pitch with his trademark passing and precise side-changes.
In terms of unique players, there are lots in the current squad with likes of C. Cole, Milner, Walcott and Lennon etc. They're all capable of "positively" changing the game (to a certain extent...). However, they all need that precision and creativity that Beckham has. Take for instance, Lennon has the pace down the lines but his last pass is not that precise and can get quite monotonous if he played for a full 90mins.
Beckham's assist ball to Wright-Phillips' goal was his first touch and to me, that was such a clever play by him. He played a fast grounder ball which surprised everybody, including England players, where everybody thought it was gonna be his trademark curving ball into the box but by that grounder he made everyone in the box fight amongst themselves created a huge space for Wright-Phillips to pop his shot. That's what I call class.
Beckham also has an ability to adapt to styles/characteristics of his receiver. He's last passes to strikers are thoughtful and easy for them to understand his intent.
I suppose these skills come with experience but I think having a player with that experience is a great asset for England and even if he was to warm the bench as an advisor or something he would be good. Personally, I was convinced of him from last night's game to have him in the squad and sure deserved his MOM!
